👏 #GIZThailand welcomes new country director Timo Menniken 🎉 GIZ Thailand is delighted to announce that Timo Menniken has started work as our new country director, effective July 2024, and will be leading our continuous mission to shape a future worth living. Timo holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Freiburg, Germany, with a key focus on Asia. Prior to joining GIZ Thailand, Timo familiarised himself with the region while working in Laos for the Mekong River Commission from 2006 to 2010. During this time, he developed a deeper interest and expertise in natural resources, climate, and biodiversity. With almost 20 years of experience with GIZ, Timo has worked in Belgrade, Serbia; Brussels, Belgium; and Germany, where he was appointed Director General. In 2020, he joined the Corporate Development Department in the same position to strengthen GIZ’s internal strategy and policy, before being appointed as Director General of Digital Transformation and IT Solutions in 2021. Timo is known for his strategic and innovative vision, keen team management and strengthening collaboration in sustainable development, as well as his adaptability to the digital realm, which will be a great driving force for GIZ Thailand’s ongoing and upcoming endeavours to support Thailand in several areas, especially in green transformation. "I am really thrilled to join GIZ Thailand and to work with all of you. This feels like a homecoming for me, both in terms of the place and the thematic area. My heart is beating strongly for green transformation, which is the major issue we are working on here. Thailand is ready to further embark on the process, and it is our role to shape it to ensure the best possible impact for the people. I am here, and GIZ is here, to support your visions, missions, and goals. Let’s get started together, let’s work together and let’s make every day count," said Timo. In addition to his role in Thailand, Timo is also regional director for Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore and Sri Lanka. GIZ Thailand’s previous country director, Reinhold Elges, who served since 2020 and played a vital role in driving forward various successful initiatives, took up his new position as Director of the GIZ Brussels Representation in Belgium in April 2024. ⚡ CASE organises “Regional Workshop on Electricity Market Designs for Renewables in Southeast Asia” . 🔋 The Regional Workshop on Electricity Market Designs for Renewables in Southeast Asia, a two-day event held in Bangkok, Thailand, stressed the urgent need for Southeast Asian nations to ramp up wind and solar energy production to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Organised by the project "Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE)" and the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP), the workshop brought together more than 60 key stakeholders from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, including government representatives, regulators, utility companies, renewable energy producers and international experts. . 🌞 The workshop highlighted the significant progress already underway across the region. All four participating countries are actively deploying renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar power. However, the workshop also acknowledged the shared challenges faced by these nations in integrating these variable renewable energy sources with their existing power grids and markets. ⚡🚘 The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangkok hosted a “Climate Talks” event—a platform dedicated to promoting discourse surrounding the transformation of Thailand’s energy and transport sectors to become sustainable—in collaboration with the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC) project.  . 🤝 The event featured key insights from German experts, highlighting Germany’s experience and strategies in energy transition through sector coupling. A panel of Thai experts from academia, civil society, and industry discussed potential steps for advancing sector coupling and supporting Thailand's sustainable transition towards clean energy, focusing on technology, policy development, and financial aspects. . 🌿 Thailand is not far behind Germany in sector coupling, focusing on smart grid flexibility to support the growth of distributed energy resources (DERs). With rising electricity demand from electric vehicle (EV) adoption, it is crucial to harmonise infrastructures and improve monitoring systems to manage changes in power grid operations. Concrete plans for policy deployment, regulatory improvements, and market mechanism development are needed. . 📈 Beyond technology and policy, financial and social aspects of the energy transition must be addressed. Significant funding and supportive monetary schemes are essential for innovation and infrastructure development. Institutional restructuring and incentive alignment are necessary for long-term transformative change. Social impacts, including potential job displacement and the need for new skills, must also be managed. Overcoming these barriers through coordinated efforts will ensure a successful energy transition. . 🌍 Funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) under Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the TGC EMC project supports Thailand’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050. 🌏 #GIZThailand, through the Climate Change, Coastal and Marine Biodiversity (#CCMB) project, supported the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), in organising an interactive biodiversity exhibition on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2024. . 🌿 The event featured an interactive biodiversity exhibition that engaged over 400 participants on a journey to become part of Thailand's 12 national biodiversity targets, which address KM-GBF’s vision of "Living in Harmony with Nature" by 2050.  . 🌱 CCMB participated by organising an exhibition on the significance and implementation of Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs) in marine and coastal areas to conserve and restore biodiversity by 2030. The exhibition also highlighted Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for sustainable ecosystem management, protection and restoration, emphasising the critical role of citizen science in conservation research.
