  • When has ‘togetherness’ in your team achieved success? In my early leadership career, I was a deputy head of a school. 🎓 I couldn’t understand why cliques were a common element among the staff. It felt almost tribal at times, with bickering and gossip being a regular thing. It was frustrating and confusing because, to me at least, it seemed obvious that we all had a shared goal. It became exhausting and demoralising as more of my time and energy was directed towards managing peoples conflicts, and problems. 😐There was no alignment. 😓There was no team unity. ❌There was no team identity. I got through it with a lot of red bull, sleepless nights and an unhealthy attachment to work that led me to exhaustion and burnout. I eventually left to work at another school alongside setting up first consultancy 'All In'. I had a passionate desire to understand team dynamics and leadership better. That was over 12 years ago. And over those years my understanding of team psychology has deepened and refined. And here’s the thing, the root of team psychology is really simple. We all need belonging, that sense that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Human beings WILL find that belonging wherever they can. At work, if the collective identity towards the 'Big We' is weaker than exclusive ‘Little We' cliques within an organisation, individuals are likely to form or retreat into silos as a means of finding that belonging and security. What’s the key takeaway here? ➡️The identity of the ‘Big We’ needs to be intentional, otherwise fragmentation is inevitable. That was the core problem all those years ago. We had a goal, but we didn't do the work to identify who we were and align to it. Now it’s my role as a Executive and Leadership Coach to ensure that the cornerstone of team identity is in place, and that everyone is on the same page.   • Catch these early signs of the dreaded ‘team silo’. Let’s say it like it is… 🤯 Team silos can ruin effectiveness. 🛑 Team silos decrease productivity. 😞 Team silos are energy draining. 💣 Team silos don’t do the business any good. And yet, in many ways, they are quite normal. Put humans together and there is as much a tendency towards disconnection as there is towards cooperation. However, an aligned and unified team is rooted in the ability to: 😁 Communicate well and move through challenges with confidence and ease. And that takes an intentional effort. In my early career as a Deputy Head of a secondary school in Leeds, I felt powerless and exhausted at the fragmentation of our team when a silo arose. However, acknowledging silos in your team and addressing the cause can lead to: ✅ Higher productivity ⬆️ Increase in effectiveness 🚀 Better resilience to challenges. Silos cause problems.   • The #1 sign a team is out of alignment It’s actually really simple to spot and is often right in front of you. ❌ You don’t need to be a psychology expert. ❌ Nor do you need to be a master at body language. And you certainly don’t need to spend hours spying on your team looking for clues – that would be RIDICULOUS. 😏 ♦️The answer is usually right in front of you. ♦️In fact, the answer is right inside you. ♦️ It starts with you and how you’re feeling. Let me explain… Do you sometimes, or often feel: 🤯 frustrated, annoyed, or discouraged in your role/work/team. 🤨 indecisive or lacking confidence in your decision-making. 😞 a lack of trust in your role/work/team. 😩 it’s hard to manage conflict. 🤔 it’s hard to delegate. 😤 angry, tired or lost.   • The #1 High Performance trait I see time and again A commitment to experimentation! 🙌 I saw this first hand working with the excellent Leadership Team at Defected Records, while supporting them through a management buyout. We worked on their 'identity pillars' to engage and build confidence and trust amongst the Leadership Team. One of those pillars stands out among the rest: ‘Fail Fast, Fix Faster’ These 4 simple words opened the doors to levels of communication and collaboration... It became a core value that everyone in the Leadership Team got behind. It sparked a culture of innovation and empowerment across the team. ‘Fail Fast, Fix Faster’ encouraged everyone to experiment, and given the talent of the team, most experiments were a huge success. Dots began joining between departments and the business went from strength to strength. Trying new things is vulnerable because it takes courage, because there's always a risk. 'Fail Fast, Fix Faster' turned that on its head. Failure was reframed as part of the innovative process. Psychological safety increased and the team had full permission to try new things. A Leadership Team aligned and unified doesn't take super powers, its about a common understanding of what you are committing to as a team and knowing how to align to it.   • Solving Wicked Problems Like a Boss All Leadership Teams have Wicked Problems. 🕰️ Wicked Problems are problems that linger. 😰 Wicked Problems usually cause a lot of emotion. 🕳️ Wicked Problems are icky, awkward and won’t go away. To solve a Wicked Problem, it’s important to start with a simple truth: There will ALWAYS be problems. AND there will ALWAYS be solutions (even if they’re not immediately obvious). It’s here that collective intelligence offers so much: Diversity of perspectives. Diversity of skill sets and experiences. Diversity of thinking and reasoning. Once the problem has been properly articulated, half the work is done. With team intelligence on your side + a wickedly simple 3-step structure = Wicked Problems are a piece of cake.     Leadership Programmes DON’T work? Only 11% of Executives in a McKinsey & Company study believe that their leadership development interventions achieved and sustained the desired results. That’s a frighteningly low number in an industry that is supposed to be worth $50 billion. Why? What’s going wrong? It’s not the lack of potency. Nope. Leadership Programmes often contain gold. Most are brimming with excellent strategies, tools and insights. It’s something else… It comes down to the way our brains are wired. Our brains come with factory settings that resist change. So it’s not just teaching skills, it’s about rewiring habits. And here we see the root of the problem. The timeless and well known wisdom: ❌Old habits are hard to break. ✅New habits are hard to form. You see, it’s not just strategy, there’s a psychology to changing behaviour. It can be boiled down to these three things: ✅Self-awareness ✅A willingness to grow ✅The effort to experiment None of that is easy. Sometimes it’s effortful work and it can be uncomfortable. So the psychological buy-in and the commitment needs to be at the level of the individual. Without the explicit togetherness in their shared vision, unified goals and overall ‘why’, human brains fall back into old familiar grooves. Excitement fades, alignment drifts and impact is short-lived. That’s the reason only 11% of leadership development interventions achieve and sustain the desired results.
