We are delighted to announce that The Handlebar Café, in Winchester, has been shortlisted for a South Downs National Park Award in the Non-Residential category. Born out of the spudYOUTH programme, the building sits on the viaduct cycle and walking path at the foot of St Catherine’s Hill, south of Winchester. The initial concept of trains passing on the bridge has been developed to create two elements that conjure the form of carriages linked by a glass divide. Since opening, it’s become a destination for walks and cyclists alike – a genuine hidden gem! To find our more about the scheme and the award shortlist, follow the links below: https://lnkd.in/gEb4zaJf https://lnkd.in/eRwNbHyt All shortlisted schemes are also up for the People’s Choice Award, so vote for the Handlebar Café here: https://lnkd.in/gdByj9aB

Architecture and Planning
ArchitecturePLB makes intelligent architecture. We listen, we think, we model and test, and then we make.
About us
ArchitecturePLB makes intelligent architecture. An explorative process is central to our work: we listen, we think, we model and test, and then we make. Our starting point is a sense of responsibility – both social and environmental – because we believe that good architecture can make better places. We are realistic and pragmatic in our approach, but know that our work also has a more creative purpose: to challenge expectations and lift the spirits. Negotiation lies at the heart of what we do, enabling us to chart a course through complex problems with sensitivity and imagination. Our work is articulate, informed by practical experience across many sectors, and we enjoy a collective interest in the craft of putting buildings together. The form and materials of our interventions are as important as the spaces in between, this responsive way of thinking about place is fundamental to the practice ethos. We owe our longevity as a practice to the fact that we are continually receptive to new ideas and fresh collaborations. ArchitecturePLB’s strong client and community relationships reflect our ability to win trust, and a reputation for reconciling certainty with invention.

Last week we had a brilliant day out for our summer practice day. We started with a tour of our recently completed building for the London South Bank Technical College – now being used as an exemplar for new build College facilities! We then had a really tasty lunch at the Cinnamon Kitchen before having a wander around the evolving Battersea Power Station Masterplan site and a trip up Lift 109 (followed by a drink or two). Even the sun shone! ☀ Great team, great day. Thanks all.

Thanks again to all those who elected to get out of bed that little bit earlier this morning and join us, Gillings Planning , Scott White and Hookins and Winchester BID for a coffee, a bacon bun, and some excellent post-election discussion with Mike Denness of Consult Communications Ltd. Another fantastic turn-out from a very diverse mix of developers, consultants and contractors from across Hampshire’s construction industry. Special thanks to Mike Denness for giving us his views on the outcome of last week’s elections and the key elements of the manifesto and yesterday’s speech by Rachel Reeves MP, relating to construction. Housing is top of the list, but there was also interesting discussion about the ‘grey belt’, town center regeneration, what to do with the ‘High Street’ and where all the new planning officers are going to come from! The mood in the room was certainly one of optimism and an expectation of a busy time ahead! #construction #development #centralsouthUK

Continuing our support for local charities, ArchitecturePLB revisited past glories on Sunday, again taking part in the Pedal Paddle Pace: a triathlon with a difference (20 km bike, 5km run, 2km kayak). All good fun. Although not officially a 'race', the competitive streak was in full evidence. A fine performance from our 3 teams saw a very creditable 2nd, 5th and 7th placing in the team event. Well done all. Team Pedalit, Legit, Boatit Paul Conway Josh Reay April Rapley Team Parallel Motion Matthew Gibbs Jo DeSyllas Andy Joyce Team LASquared Andrew Fifield Imran Galadinci Leo Pickford
