Change a child’s life story

About us

Without additional measures, by 2030 84 million children and youth will be out of school. In coffee growing communities, this challenge is further exacerbated by financial pressures, the risks of travelling long distances to rural schools, and seasonal migration to harvest coffee. The Costa Foundation is a grant giving body that was established in 2007 as the charitable foundation of Costa Coffee to improve the life chances of children and young people in coffee growing communities by providing the opportunity for a safe, quality education. Over the past 17 years, the Costa Foundation has invested over £20 million on more than 100 new schools, over 800 classrooms in 10 countries, giving in excess of 120,000 children access to education in coffee-growing communities across the world. We work with coffee growing communities across the globe and currently our support focuses on Colombia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia. Our work is only made possible thanks to our fantastic partners: • Ecom Agroindustrial Corp • Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia • Fundacion Nicafrance • Imagine 1 Day • PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) • Plan International • Seeds for Progress • Volcafe If you would like to find out more, discuss becoming a partner, fundraise for us or make a donation, then please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.

This week we are celebrating the first ever UN #internationaldayofplay ! Play is such an important, foundational part of childhood which allows children and young people many opportunities to thrive. Did you know that the right of the child to rest, leisure, play, recreational activities, cultural life and the arts is accepted universally and set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child? Play is not a 'nice to have', it is essential for an individual's development and without safe spaces to delight in play, children and young people are less likely to thrive. At the Costa Foundation we recognise the importance of play as an integral and formative part of childhood. Funding the construction of schools is about so much more than just building a space to sit down and learn. It is about creating environments where children have the safety and security to be able to express themselves, get creative, dance, jump, skip, laugh, make believe and explore the world around them through learning and play opportunities. Something that we are proud of and remain wholly committed to, in order to continue our mission of improving the life chances of children and young people within coffee growing communities around the world. #internationaldayofplay2024 📸 Eleazar Cuadros & PEAS

World bicycle day was celebrated across the globe earlier this week, a day which recognises the "uniqueness, longevity and versatility" of the bicycle. Did you know that we have recently funded cycling projects in two Zambian schools with our partners PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools)? With the help of World Bicycle Relief and their extensive experience and expertise in mobilising communities in rural regions of the world, we have been able to fund a pilot of the #cyclingforsuccess programme. Students have been able to benefit from the use of new bicycles to make their long journeys across tough rural terrain shorter, easier and safer. Now, rather than a three hour walk, young people are able to cycle to school in around 45 minutes, meaning more time and energy to spend there with their peers to learn and socialise! In January 2023, 240 rugged Buffalo Bikes were given to those who travel more than 3 kilometres to school, with 60% of them allocated to girls. This aim of this programme was to increase student attendance and rates of retention, improve safety, boost self-confidence and provide more time for studying, thereby enhancing learning outcomes over the long term, Similar programmes have seen absenteeism reduce by 28% and girls were 19% less likely to drop out of school. We are already seeing really encouraging results from this programme, something that we are delighted to celebrate!

What an experience…I’ve struggled to put our incredible Costa Foundation trip to Colombia last week into words. I’ve decided to split the many photos and thoughts into a few posts to get some of my key insights across: children & young people, teachers, coffee & team. The Costa Foundation has funded eight schools in rural coffee communities in Colombia and we visited four in the Cundinamarca region, hosted by our partner National Federation of Colombian Coffee Growers. This involved long journeys on winding roads that the students have to travel on every day to get to school and do not have the bumper pack of Kwells that I did! This post is focused on the inspiring children and young people we met, who are the future of these communities. I asked them what their dreams were for the future & they talked about being footballers (so ended up in conversations about Luís Diaz as I have Liverpool Football Club fans in my house!) agronomists, vets, psychologists, doctors, baristas and coffee farmers to name a few. The level of confidence and talent was so impressive, with students hosting their annual ‘International Teachers Day’, which schools in the UK could use as a role model. Many were keen to learn more about our lives and tell us about the benefits of their school. We spoke to alumni too, who now run their own business linked to coffee. We visited the first school the Costa Foundation ever funded globally and team Costa aka ‘England’ ended up in a football match against the students ‘Colombia’. We won’t mention the score… For me here the key insight is the power of giving children and young people the opportunity to dream and open their minds to new opportunities. Local coffee producers Buani Cafe are volunteering at the school to teach children about the whole coffee ecosystem, not only farming, and all the opportunities this presents. #ChangeAChildsLifeStory #BuaniCafe

We are so excited for this new project with PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) We are always seeking to explore more innovative, sustainable approaches to offering opportunities for safe and quality education, can't wait to see the completed build!

PEAS are excited to announce that we are piloting a new climate-friendly innovation in Uganda!   Thanks to the generous support of our long time corporate partner, Costa Foundation, we've teamed up with HYT Uganda - a trailblazer in sustainable building practices in East Africa - to launch a pioneering project at PEAS Bridge Secondary School.   We're constructing a sanitation block using Interlocking Stabilised Soil Blocks, a sustainable alternative to traditional burnt bricks. These blocks, made from compressed earth and cement, not only ensure zero deforestation but also significantly reduce carbon emissions, perfectly aligning with PEAS' commitment to environmental sustainability.   We can't wait to see the impact of this pilot project. If you'd like to hear more and support PEAS to roll out these climate-friendly construction practices to larger-scale projects across the PEAS Uganda network contact partnerships@peas.org.uk   #SustainableConstruction #ClimateAction #EmpoweringCommunities #WASH

A couple of days in London this week and no what better way to get out of the office for a couple of hours than to visit a store with a manager who is super engaged with the Costa Foundation. Collette's energy is just infectious and she always goes above and beyond to fundraise. A massive thank you for all you do.

Recently our Executive Director Kate O'Brien O’Brien and John English (Community Manager, Costa Coffee) travelled to Honduras to see all the amazing work that the Costa Foundation has achieved in coffee-growing communities in partnership with Plan International UK and Plan International Honduras. Many rural communities in Honduras face the reality of the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Central America, driven by high levels of sexual violence. In some of the communities Kate and John visited, around 25% of girls had two babies by the time they were 15. Meaning many of these girls struggle for a fair chance at education. It was great to see the work the team at Plan International Honduras is doing to support these communities, such as workshops with parents, carers, children, and teachers. All to raise awareness of sexual violence, how to report abuse and increase access to education. Thank you to all the Costa Coffee store teams and customers for raising the money to enable us to fund this valuable work. #ChangeAChildsLifeStory #Educationforall #CostaFoundation
