How do you know if Rope Access Techniques are right for your working at height task?? If you have a work scope at height, and you're asking a rope access company to look at it, they should carry out a pre work analysis.  This will allow them to confirm if rope access is a suitable method, and if it is, enable them to ensure that control measures and resources are in place to create a safe and efficient working environment. Some examples of typical points to be addressed are: 🔎 How the work area can be accessed and exited safely. 💹 The ease and safety with which technicians will be able to use tools and equipment whilst suspended. ⛔ The risk of loose materials or equipment falling below during the works. ⚠ Whether the time the technician/s are at the work-front could put them at risk from prolonged exposure to extremes of heat or cold. ⛑ Whether all technicians will be able to be rescued from any position they’re in, through all phases of the work scope. It's important that at least these points are considered, it helps ensure the plan is workable, the technician/s are supported to be in the best position to deliver quality work, and if the worst were to happen, any team member could be rescued quickly and efficiently. The information Evolve gather on site visits help us determine if rope access is the right method for your work scope, and if it is, assist us in creating and maintaining a safe system of work to carry it out under. If you've got a work scope at height, and want it addressed efficiently and professionally, or need some advice, feel free to reach out. 💻 www.evolveropeaccess.co.uk 📧 enquire@evolveropeaccess.co.uk

A quick look at two essential checks: 🔍 Pre-Use, and Buddy Checks of Personal Rope Access Equipment 🛠️ Pre-Use Equipment Checks: Before first use each day, we take the time for a visual, tactile, and function check of our equipment. It's not just about the start of the day; monitoring our equipment's condition throughout the day is crucial. Wear and tear, abrasion, and extreme conditions can affect its integrity, so these checks ensure everything is safe to use. 🤝 Buddy checks: A buddy check is an essential double-check for safety in rope access operations. Once we’ve assembled and put on our gear, we have a workmate check our setup. This ensures harnesses, lanyards, helmets, and connectors are correctly secured and adjusted, it’s an opportunity to catch any issues we might have missed. 🔎 Collaborative Safety: Buddy checks add an extra layer of protection, a second set of eyes, we're looking out for each other. 🛡️ Separate but Essential: Both pre-use and buddy checks play distinct and vital roles in maintaining safety in rope access operations. We make them a non-negotiable part of our workday to ensure a safer working environment. 🛑 Barriers to Checks: Percieved time pressure, hierarchy within teams, ego, and even embarrassment can prevent these checks taking place. 🚀 Solutions: These checks don't take long, and Evolve supervisors make sure they take place. We use simple checklists to make sure that we cover the essentials efficiently. We empower all team members to initiate checking equipment, and encourage open communication around what we’re looking for, and any issues we find. We're protecting ourselves, each other, and our clients. #evolveropeaccess #industrialropeaccess #safetyfirst #collaboration #teamwork

With several interesting projects in the pipeline we're checking and allocating resources to ensure that we put: ✅ Competent people ✅ With a workable plan ✅ In the right place ✅ At the right time ✅ With sufficient, suitable equipment We know that too often in our industry, planning seems to run out of steam when it comes to provision of equipment to prevent dropped objects. Tales of companies providing polyprop, shoelaces, or nothing at all, for tethering tools might seem unlikely given the high potential for harm............. we've seen all three. 💡 We take the pressure to solve this safety critical aspect of the work we do, off our teams, by providing tool tethering and storage solutions from Never Let Go. Our intent and expectations for dropped object prevention are crystal clear. ⛔ All our work-fronts are Zero Drop Zones. The potential outcomes for people struck by falling objects are well highlighted by this Dropped Object Calculator from Never Let Go. A lot of the objects and tools that we use in the course of our work, if dropped from a height of 10m or more would have the potential to cause major injury or fatality. Evolve Rope Access don't take that chance. www.evolveropeaccess.co.uk #zerodrops #tooltethering #workingatheight

While we look forward to dry days, what does wet weather mean for rope access operations? Here are some of the things we focus on: 👫 Clothing - A layered approach, avoiding cotton, topped off with a waterproof hard shell layer. Extending comfortable working time. 🌧 Slips, trips, and falls - Drawing attention to the potential for slippery surfaces, and the need for extra care. ⛈ Lightning - We're always checking the weather forecast, but when the potential for lightning exists we use lightning tracking tech as well. 🌦 Transitions - The action of climbing over parapets, handrails, and other obstructions as we move from 'safe areas', to 'on-the-ropes'. Increased potential for slips means we focus on assisting each other to ensure transitions are smooth and safe. 🌧 Reduced friction - Wet ropes means reduced friction between descenders and ropes. This can make for jerkier, less controlled movements if not addressed. 🌧 Workfront stability - Additional support for the technician at the wet pointy end, could be a colleague close at hand, could be additional rope rigging or equipment to create the necessary stability. We'd love to hear about what additional controls you implement when it rains....

Happy Birthday to Evolve's Rope Access Manager Dan Hegarty

View profile for Dan Hegarty, graphic

Director/Rope Access Manager/Technical Authority at Evolve Rope Access

🌞 Another lap around the sun……… 🤔 It’s got me reflecting on my time in the rope access industry. From those early jobs, 25 years ago, where I’d, ‘draw the short straw’ for the downwind elevations on pylon painting jobs (those 'old dogs' I worked with knew a few tricks!), through to the management and supervision of complex, high potential projects in heavy industry. 🙏 I’ve been really fortunate to work with some of the best teams our industry has produced, shout out to the teams at HIGH Q UK LIMITED and Access Techniques Ltd, to name two, and I’ve learned a lot. Among other things, I’ve learned that: ➡ To do what we do safely and effectively requires a team effort. Much like the creation and maintenance of a Safe System Of Work, all elements are interdependent. We need each other. ➡ The quality of the planning has a huge bearing on the outcome. The right plan, people, and equipment, in the right place, at the right time…..golden. The ability to plan effectively is a product of experience, where the context and quality of experience matters. Experience only teaches the teachable, try to be teachable. ➡ Proper resourcing of tools and equipment for rope access teams is too often overlooked. To fail at this stage of planning is a false economy, and potentially dangerous. Rope Access Techs are a resourceful bunch, but if they're hunting for things to use as barriers and tool lanyards it's a bad use of a working team’s time, focus, energy, and good will. ➡ 'Pressure' doesn’t always come shouting to announce its presence, it can creep in unseen….. Thoughts of, “We’ve got to get it done, we’re all here, the kit’s here, the client’s here”, “We’ve only got one more to do, let’s get it done, and get out of here”. Beware the more subtle routes that pressure sometimes uses. ➡ With all our industry capability for complexity, our greatest days are hollow victories if we don’t get the basics right. For me getting the basics right is about caring about the people around us, our team members, our clients, and the public. Effective barriers, suitable tool storage and tethering, pre-use checks, and buddy checking take time, not much time, but time that is often subject to that creeping pressure, ("we'd better get started") Hollow victories can become catastrophes in the blink of an eye. Stop, get it right, care. So whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve done a few laps yourself, I hope you enjoy it, stay open to learning, look out for each other, and stay safe.
