EMS at 5G ConQuest: Recently at the invitation of Colin Evison we attended BRE science park to see and discuss the 15 month innovation project with Innovate UK to construct a solar powered private 5G network. BAM UK & Ireland has been at the forefront of innovation with 5G networks already deploying them in Scotland and the Shetlands. Other partners in the project were AttoCore, Leading Edge Power and Glideology. It was an exciting and honest discussion. Sometimes the benefits of new technologies are not immediately obvious and we talked about the readiness of construction for private 5G, the value case and use cases that deliver transformation benefits. We also covered the lowdown on backhaul, pros and cons of cellular, satellite, fibre, bonded internet and private networks, and cost benefits of each. Although in general low cost pilots are good, 5G is a digital revolution that can't be sold on incremental benefits. EMS is part of COMIT Projects Ltd. 5G and Innovate groups which centre around practical learnings that can benefit the industry. 5G ConQuest is a good example of leading edge technology that could be deployed on more sites to deliver safer, faster, better results. During the day contractors and technology partners shared learnings and discussed future applications. Overall it was great to get practical insights on an emerging technology and align stories from out in the field, to the realities. EMS is about to deploy our own experimental private 5G network with some pretty interesting use cases, stay tuned to find out more! As part of the TRAMS-Enterprise project, the Glideology team attended two workshops held at BAM UK & Ireland in London and Skanksa UK in Watford. Some amazing insights where shared regarding both the practical applications and specific challenges associated in using trustworthy AI in construction.

When things go wrong it's good news... Are you fed up with constant software updates? New features are great, but patches can leave a lot to be desired. Why does Teams always do an update just before that important meeting? Updating embedded software in the field can be very costly and complicated, which is why extensive testing is essential for consistent operation. Here are three useful tips: 1. Test the software in your sleep: When your coding is done and you head home for the day, leave your newly written software running overnight. Why? One reason could be hidden memory and storage issues, and these are more likely to show up with extended run times. 2. Expect the unexpected: Input all possible value ranges. If you make any assumptions regarding input values, your software is likely to crash one day - probably on a Friday at 4:59 pm... 3. Review your testing plan: Discuss testing with peers to eliminate bias. Other team members may suggest scenarios that you hadn't considered. In summary, when software goes wrong during development, the only thing it really damages is the software engineers pride temporarily. This gives you the opportunity to fix the issue properly which is of course very good news for the customer!
