Pelagic fish resources are known to be both nutritious and climate friendly. In its latest SOFIA report, FAO is repeating that pelagic #fisheries have the highest scores of biologically sustainable stocks. For all these reasons, these species are recommended in people’s diets 🍽. In which form should this be? Read our contribution to the discussion 👇 #aquaculture #feed #nutrition
IFFO – The Marine Ingredients Organisation
Environmental Services
IFFO is the international trade organisation that represents the marine ingredients industry worldwide.
About us
IFFO is the international organisation that is leading the responsible development of marine ingredients. We are globally respected and regularly represent the industry at international forums, as well as holding observer status at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the EU Commission and Parliament. Acting on behalf of the fishmeal and fish oil producers and their trade associates, IFFO works to strengthen the global standing of the industry, while ensuring sustainable future supplies worldwide. With a network of members reaching across 60 countries, our members account for over 55% of world production and 75% of the fishmeal and fish oil traded worldwide. While these products are the core of our industry, recent years have seen a widening to include marine algae cultivation and the production of meal and oil from krill. Our members include producers, traders, feed companies, edible oil refiners, retailers, financial institutions, governmental and non-governmental organisations.

In the July edition of International Aquafeed, Dr Brett Glencross makes the case for stronger involvement of industry in many scientific projects: interaction between the two parts of the science (the applied and strategic), is critical to advancing the science.
The latest edition of International Aquafeed is now available in-print, online and on our app! The features in this edition begin with a story about 'Working Capital An Essential Ingredient for Feed Companies' from Catherine Alvino, Marketing Manager, Tradewind, USA. This is followed by an interesting article from OddGeir Oddsen, CEO, ProChaete, Norway, which discusses 'Turning Waste into Wealth The Sustainable Innovation in Aquafeed' For those of our readers that particularly enjoy our Fish Farming Technology portion of the magazine, we have many amazing stories this month. Including a piece from AQUA Sightline about 'Data Analytics To enhance IPRS and Split Pond Systems ' It has been a busy time recently when it comes to Aquaculture events, but we have a packed magazine this month which should easily catch you up on all of the latest news from events all across the industry. This is due to our excellent reports, with us covering Aquaculture UK, the Blue Food Innovation Summit and ISFNF Puerto Vallarta México inside our latest edition. Finally, this month International Aquafeed was lucky enough to interview Vincent Erenst, CEO, The Kingfish Company. Erenst has a strong international, operational and transformational track record with more than 35 years of experience leading aquaculture companies and we were able to talk to him about his time in the industry, sustainability and much more, this is definitely one you do not want to miss! At the 2024 ISFNF Puerto Vallarta México, Dr Brett Glencross noted that #health & #welfare issues in salmon farming are closely linked to #nutrition: "We need to better understand the mechanisms of what animals really need" and how strategic ingredients like #fishmeal and #fish oil can work with new ingredients in a complementary way. #aquaculture #feed
Roger D Gilbert, Publisher of International Aquafeed magazine, speaks to Brett Glencross, Technical director at IFFO – The Marine Ingredients Organisation and Chairman for the scientific committee at ISFNF, during the bi-annual ISFNF Puerto Vallarta México 2024. Mr Glencross talks about the long running ISFNF bi annual conference, which has been running for 40 years now, seeing its first show in Mexico this year. He talks about the trends he’s seen develop in health and welfare in regards to salmon farming, how much of that is predicated in the fact that basic nutrition is often times missing, either due to raw materials not being fully assessed, or the lack of understanding of the requirements changing due to animal size/condition. Mr Glencross states that people needs to start looking at sustainability objectively, with assessable criteria and Life cycle assessments, so that sustainability can actually mean something.

As the #aquaculture industry has evolved over the years, so have the #metrics used to measure the use of #marineingredients. Lifecycle assessment (#LCA) analyses consist in a holistic approach to assess the sustainability of the use of all #feed ingredient resources on an equivalent basis. Check out the latest peer reviewed #research paper which the prestigious Fisheries Science & Aquaculture journal has just published. https://lnkd.in/dxpUpviZ Brett Glencross Enrico Bachis, PHD Dave Robb Richard Newton
