With #infrastructure at the front of everyone's minds, the new edition of the Landscape Institute's Journal is timely indeed. If we make #wellbeing central to the drive for new homes this means thinking seriously and in a collaborative way about #connectivity and how we can support healthier lifestyles and create fairer places for all. A great interview by journalist Laura Laker with Alister Kratt in her article "The Place of Transport" - pages 14-19. Good placemaking is founded on good connectivity – and that has to be a collaborative endeavour, argues Alister Kratt. It’s not just about making streets and spaces look more attractive. “It’s about understanding place and how it is defined; how spaces are activated and how good design can influence behaviour, movement and support connection and deliver wider outcomes.” Well worth a deep dive. Connecting people and place through landscape
About us
At LDA Design, we make great places and shape the world around us for the better. We do this by connecting people and place through landscape. The origin of the word landscape is to create a place where people belong. We follow the principles of ‘first life, then spaces, then buildings’. Whether we are designing a new district, restoring a park or regenerating an estate, we start with what people want and need. LDA Design led the final landscape masterplan and detailed design for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, one of Europe’s most successful new parklands. We have designed and delivered some of the UK’s most challenging city centre public realm projects, including London’s Battersea Power Station, Stratford Waterfront and Strand Aldwych. This work includes George Street in Edinburgh and the transformation of public realm in Newcastle City Centre. We have developed a public realm strategy for Liverpool that will shape the centre for the next 25 years. Our award-winning partnership with Camden has transformed West End streets, carving out new green space and creating a healthier, safer, and more pleasant experience for pedestrians and cyclists. The climate crisis is the biggest challenge of our generation. As the UK weans itself off fossil fuels, a substantially increased demand for a reliable and secure mix of low-carbon energy lies ahead. Our long-standing commitment to renewable energy, since its infancy, places us at the forefront to help clients respond to this global challenge. Our experience, together with our creativity and practical appreciation of issues, allow us to provide robust advice and leadership that reflects an understanding of commerciality, risk and opportunity. We helped secure consent for Hornsea Three, which will be the UK’s largest offshore windfarm. LDA Design is proud to be 100% employee owned. We are landscape architects, urban designers, planners, environmental planners and EIA coordinators.

End of a busy week, and all thoughts head to #Paris as the world’s biggest sporting spectacle gets underway. Hosting the #Olympic and #Paralympic Games is hugely challenging for all sorts of reasons. So far, Paris has done an amazing job at putting #sustainability and the #environment at the heart. For the first time ever, the opening ceremony is in the city, not a stadium. Instead, a river restored to health will be the star performer as the athletes’ parade on the #Seine. And Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo made good on her promise to swim in the cleaned-up Seine ahead of the start of the Games (https://lnkd.in/epVysTBz). Both actions symbolic of an approach that has pushed for ambitious city transformation as #legacy. A big part of #London’s legacy was the creation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, again with a river playing a heroic role. So, we’ve been thinking a bit about that too and what it took to make it happen and what the Park has become. Some thoughts from four LDA Design directors on the making of the Olympic Park: https://lnkd.in/ebUzuNUJ And good luck, Paris. We’ll be cheering you on. #Olympics #Paris2024 #London2012 #OlympicPark #QEOP #QueenElizabethOlympicPark #OlympicGames #SustainableCities #BetterCities Image of Mayor Hidalgo in the Seine: credit: Newscom/Alamy Live News Image 3: View north along the River Lea towards the Velodrome, North Park credit Robin Forster for LDA Design

Summer in the city. Benjamin Walker, a LDA Design director and studio lead for #London, capturing beautifully the joy of what we do - creating places where people belong - and the legacies we leave behind. It's vital we get things right and connect people of all ages to the places where they live. Thanks, Ben, for giving us this slide of life. Makes us all want to do cartwheels. Proper mixed-use One of the best bits about running home (humble brag) is moving through spaces we have designed, seeing how they are used, by who, and when they are full of life. At Battersea last night around 6ish - toddlers taking first steps, children cartwheeling, pram gatherings, sun-tanners, cyclists, tv watchers and people just sitting. A real mixed-use space. #battersea #batterseapowerstation #publicspace #cities #summerofsport LDA Design

For promoters and supporters of renewable energy in the UK, and LDA Design has been actively involved in the industry from its infancy, it’s fair to say it’s been a good few weeks. First, the de facto ban on onshore wind was lifted. Then Mallard Pass Solar Farm – a multi-services project for us that will power around 92,000 homes a year – was among three clean energy projects consented by the Secretary of State. 🙌 This was followed by the King’s Speech, which committed the Government to accelerating high-quality #infrastructure and achieving a #carbon-free electricity network by 2030. Much will rest on the delivery of onshore and offshore wind projects. All feels welcome and necessary and we’re excited by the possibilities. Over time, it’s easy to lose track of how many wind farms we’ve been involved in. So, we added them up – and it works out to be about 160 onshore and 24 offshore projects, including South Kyle and Jack’s Lane onshore wind farms and #Hornsea3, the UK’s largest offshore wind farm. We added up the power output and that came out at around 3,136 MW for onshore alone and then we mapped them out. It’s a journey that will take you from coast to coast, from toe to top. So, if you’re keen to catch the winds of change and get a wind project off the ground, as well as maximising the benefits for the #community and the #environment, we can support you with every stage from feasibility, consenting strategy, #design, #engagement, #planning, #EIA and #LVIA. More incredibly good news to share as Mallard Pass Solar Farm is consented by Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero following a recommendation for approval by PINS. Mallard Pass, brought forward by Windel Energy and Recurrent Energy, will become one of the UK’s largest #solar ☀ farms generating enough clean energy to power 92,000 homes annually. It is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project. We were part of a fantastic team, with Pinsent Masons Counter Context Ltd Ardent Humbeat and DWD. LDA Design Director and Trustee, Robert Pile said the decision was great news because, "the UK needs to pick up the pace in decarbonising #energy and achieving net zero, and consents for projects at this scale signal a decisive response to #climate breakdown." It has been a hugely collaborative project for us, bringing together LDA Design's #EIA #Masterplanning #EnvironmentalPlanning and #Planning services – a first for us on a project of this kind. This combination was key to establishing a framework for good design and delivering against outcomes for climate, people, place and value. Fantastic news in from Latimer by Clarion Housing Group on the #regeneration and refurbishment of the London Chest Hospital which has taken a big step forward. A huge team effort to get to this point. Great working with Latimer, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and all the project team. You might remember that this is the site with a veteran Mulberry tree at the heart, which will be preserved. The scheme will also create inviting open spaces including a new square and public lawn, blending #heritage and historical significance with lovely new housing, including 50% affordable. All the details below ⬇ Well done everyone, from LDA Design this includes Benjamin Walker Liz Stark Ross Schaffer and more. 👏 #bettercity #london #housing #planning #affordablehousing #publicspaces #publicrealm #LatimerHomes #sustainableliving #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign #LondonChestHospital
We are pleased to announce that Latimer by Clarion Housing Group have received resolution to grant planning permission from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for the redevelopment of the historic London Chest Hospital site in Bethnal Green following over two years of consultation and engagement with the local community. This landmark project will transform the disused site into a thriving community with 274 new homes; 50% of which will be affordable housing, including 76 new Social Rented homes, underscoring our commitment to addressing housing needs and fostering inclusive communities. Our vision, which has been brought to life by Stirling Prize winning architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris reserving and restoring the Grade II-listed main hospital building, the Sanitary Tower and the South Wing. In addition, five new buildings will be constructed, providing high-quality new housing and importantly we will be preserving the veteran Mulberry tree, one of East London's most cherished natural landmarks. The design of the scheme will also result in the creation of high quality publicly accessible open spaces including a new square on St James’s Avenue and restoration of the formal lawn in front of the hospital as a public lawn. There will also be commercial space provided within the South Wing for a café and for community use. Richard Cook, Group Director of Development at Latimer, says: "This project represents a unique opportunity to blend the historical significance of the site with contemporary housing needs. Our commitment to providing a high proportion of affordable homes and preserving the Mulberry tree reflects our dedication to creating sustainable and inclusive communities." We will keep you updated as we embark on this exciting journey to breathe new life into the London Chest Hospital site. Putting #nature back into our towns and cities. Design West's 'Nature Rising' with LDA Design's Kirsty Barker should be a great discussion. Kirsty is leading our contribution on some amazing projects, including #SouthseaCoastalScheme, the UK’s largest local authority-led coastal defences project, with Coastal Partners and Portsmouth City Council, helping to deliver a seafront that is not only more climate resilient, protecting homes and businesses from flooding, but also much more biodiverse and massively improved for local residents and visitors. Doing it ‘cos we care … a glimpse into the process of creating the new seating that defines the entrance to the recently pedestrianised #Strand (designed by LDA Design, fabricated by millimetre) – 2,000 steel components sitting underneath the timber skin; more than 600 individual timber panels laminated and engineered together, finally handcrafted before being assembled. Plus an insight from LDA Design's Cannon Ivers of the different scales at work in a project like this – from the city scale to being in the space and to feel like you belong there. Fascinating stuff. Taken from 'A seat with a view' - a millimetre I LDA Design talk on #Strand as part of this year's London Festival of Architecture. Hosted by Alan Moore of The Beautiful Design Project: Thanks again to Alan, Cannon, Karn Sandilands of millimetre, urban designer and place-maker Ruchi Chakravarty (formerly of Westminster City Council) and Charlotte Bovis, senior associate with Heatherwick studio. 🎊 In celebration of another successful year of London Festival of Architecture here are some of the clips from our #LFA event a few weeks ago at the #StrandAldwych talking about our large scale public realm project! Amongst other things, our director Karn Sandilands spoke about the fabrication and installation of the seating, Cannon Ivers at LDA Design talked about the connection and importance to context and scale within the city and Charlotte McCarthy at Heatherwick studio spoke on the impact of an intervention such as pedestrianising such a historic landmark. It was a pleasure to bring together some of the many people across the design, planning and fabrication who helped make this project happen. Thank you and congratulations to London Festival of Architecture for another fantastic year of events, talks and workshops across our capital.
