🟩🚨 Big milestone: Our new decarbonisation solution, ACLA®, has been used in a road resurfacing project for the first time. 🛣️ ACLA® enables the production of net zero asphalt and has been used in resurfacing works this week at Elvet Hill, Durham. 🌿 ACLA® utilises the carbon removal technology of sequestration to permanently remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. 🔄 As Durham University’s first student spin-out company, we are proud to bring our groundbreaking new solution to a road next to the university campus. 🟢 ACLA® presents a simple and scalable solution for the industry to decarbonise road networks. ✳️ Durham County Council have used a new type of asphalt incorporating our decarbonisation solution, ACLA®, the carbon-negative aggregate that we have designed and manufactured. 🪨 ACLA® was used in the binder course of the resurfacing alongside other circular carbon-saving materials sourced within the county. 🏙️ The work was undertaken in partnership with Durham County Council and the council’s roads resurfacing partner, Rainton Construction, part of MGL Group. The testing of ACLA® has been made possible through collaboration and support from National Highways and Skanska as part of the Accelerating Low Carbon Innovation Programme, as well as ongoing support from The Earthshot Prize. About us
Low Carbon Materials (LCM) is a climate-tech company servicing the green construction sector. Science-based and purpose-driven, LCM works closely with construction partners to develop innovative, sustainable, and carbon-negative/low-carbon building materials. LCM has won a series of awards, including The Earthshot Prize Finalist in the 'Fix Our Climate' category, in recognition of its innovative, waste-based aggregate - OSTO. LCM's flagship product, OSTO, is a carbon-negative aggregate designed to replace traditional aggregates in the production of concrete. Concrete has a significant carbon footprint, contributing 8% of CO2 emissions globally*, however, with building material innovation and new material application, this figure can be hugely reduced - concrete can be made carbon neutral by utilising LCM's OSTO in concrete mixes. The company, a spin-out from Durham University, was founded by three Ph.D. students, Dr. Natasha Boulding, Dr. Phil Buckley, and Scott Bush. Both Dr. Boulding and Mr. Bush have been recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 2023. To find out more contact sales@lowcarbonmaterials.com

📋 We recently visited Tarmac to compare notes on net zero innovation and discuss future projects. 🛣️ It was fantastic to visit Tarmac’s labs and asphalt plant having worked with them on two recent projects: 🟠 1 - Lodge Hill Road, with Redbridge Council in partnership with Kenson Highways. An asphalt mix incorporating our carbon-negative aggregate, ACLA®, was supplied by Tarmac to significantly lower the carbon footprint of this project. Using ACLA®, Tarmac’s asphalt reduced the Lodge Hill Road’s carbon footprint by 68%. That’s equivalent to an average UK car driving 17,400 miles or approximately a round trip to Los Angeles for two people. 🟠 2 - Northbound carriageway of the M11 in Essex. ACLA® (our decarbonisation solution for asphalt) was piloted by National Highways on a UK motorway with the support of Skanska and Tarmac. The testing of ACLA® was made possible through collaboration and support from Tarmac, National Highways and Skanska as part of the Accelerating Low Carbon Innovation Programme hosted by the Connected Places Catapult. . 🌟 We look forward to many more exciting collaborations in the future! ⏩ Read more about our project in Essex here: https://lnkd.in/d7P4wT9Y ⏩ Read more about our project in Redbridge here: https://lnkd.in/d7F5SZrT #SustainableConstruction #LowCarbonMaterials #NetZero #LowCarbonConstruction #LocalRoads

In the news today - carbon negative asphalt trials on the M11. "The replacement carbon-negative aggregate has the potential to significantly lower the carbon footprint of asphalt by making it CO2 absorbing. This ‘next generation’ construction material is being tested on the northbound carriageway of the M11 in Essex during essential resurfacing and maintenance work between junctions 7 and 8." What are your thoughts? Is this the future? https://lnkd.in/e7_wFfi4 #asphalt #carbonnegative #highways #innovation

Mike Bloomberg understands the value of supporting climate innovators. It was great to attend The Earthshot Prize and Bloomberg Philanthropies events during London Climate Action Week. Two quotes from Mr Bloomberg resonated with me as he emphasised the opportunity climate change presents for building a better future. “We need to marshal all of humanity’s creativity.” “We need to support more collaboration.” These short quotes sum it all up perfectly. The innovators need to be found, and their solutions need investment and support to scale their impact. As an Earthshot Prize Finalist, Low Carbon Materials (LCM) has experienced amazing support in helping our groundbreaking decarbonisation solutions get adopted into live projects. Bloomberg has featured us in roundtable discussions with industry leaders and invited me to speak on stage at the BloombergNEF Summit. …and it’s always a pleasure to spend time in their European HQ - a demonstration of world-class engineering and design (it received a BREEAM score of 98.5% – the highest design-stage score ever achieved by any major office development). Events such as the ones during #LCAW24 are always valuable, providing networking opportunities, insightful expert advice and a lot of encouraging optimism!
