Pat Garrett's story, a lawyer who found himself at the heart of this fascinating period, is a fitting subject for revisiting this June, the month of his birth in 1850. While the details of his practice remain a bit of mystery, his story offers a glimpse into the future of the legal profession. Back then, lawyers built the legal structures that brought order. Today's lawyers navigate a complex web of laws with the help of technology. Despite the shift, core principles remain. Garrett likely championed a strong legal system, a value we share today. The pursuit of a strong legal framework persists, though the methods have transformed. But why is Pat Garret in the history books? Well, beyond his role in legal transformation, he is also remembered for his involvement with another notorious figure of the Wild West, Billy the Kid. As Sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico, Garret took to the road, and tracked down Billy the Kid in 1881. This event cemented Garrett's place in Western history, forever linking him to a legendary outlaw and a period of dramatic legal change. So, as we look back at this lawyer from the untamed frontier, let's reflect on the evolution of the legal profession.
