Having the capability to successfully test a stent, the thin mesh tube used to support narrow or weak arteries, is increasingly important for many of our customers in the medical device industry. Given the size of the stent, where the mesh is sometimes as thin as a human hair, this can be a difficult process, especially in the case of drug-eluting stents. These are stents coated with a biodegradable and biocompatible coating that slowly and continuously releases medicine at the artery to inhibit initial thickening and to prevent the artery from blocking again.   The adhesion of these novel coatings to the stent substrate is extremely important but not easy to test due to the extremely small size of the stents and the different shapes involved. To accurately and reliably test the coatings, a tool with precise control over XY coordinates and load is required.   In this application note, the NANOVEA Profilometers | Tribometers | Mechanical Testers | Lab Services Mechanical Tester is used in Nano Scratch Mode to analyse the cohesive and adhesive strength of a coating on a metal stent mesh sample. This application note is an excellent demonstration of how the Nanovea tool can provide accurate and repeatable measurements on a sample the size of a human hair. In the first of our Product Spotlights, we are shining a light on the Droplet Lab Dropometer. This is a unique smartphone based optical tensiometer developed by the experts at Droplet Lab who are simplifying the world of surface science with smartphone technology. This makes the Dropometer an affordable, accurate option for most labs.   The Droplet Lab Dropometer is used to measure the surface properties of materials by making measurements such as 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞, 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 and 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞. The system has been shown to achieve 0.01% accuracy in contact angle measurement with respect to Young-Laplace and polynomial fitting models and an accuracy of 0.001% for surface tension measurements. The tensiometer is simple to operate, compact and portable. Out and about at the UKIVA (UK Industrial Vision Association) Machine Vision Conference and Exhibition. Our Sales Director Mark Shropshall headed to the CBS Arena in Coventry to learn about the latest developments and new technology within the machine vision sector. With our partners DENKweit specialising in Vision AI it’s always important for us to be informed of the new ideas and companies within the space. More scientific materials leaving Mi-Net headquarters. Although this may look like a rather boring box, this is a box of plastic scintillator fibres from Luxium Solutions that is now on its way to a UK university. The fibres are used in a range of interesting applications such as industrial gauging, real time imaging systems and calorimeters. In the UK, we have many customers, including numerous universities, using scintillator fibres in muon imaging systems.
