Why are we creating habitat for great crested newts? 🦎 Great crested newts are the largest of the UK’s three native species of newt and are a great indicator of the health of a water source – they will travel up to 1km to find the right pond. Over the last 100 years, great crested newts have disappeared from many sites right across Europe, mainly because of pond loss and intensive agriculture. Alongside delivering Natural England's own District Level Licensing scheme, we are working with Nature Space Partnership NatureSpace Partnership (NSP) and Newt Conservation Partnership Newt Conservation Partnership (NCP) to share knowledge and evaluate the outcomes of the schemes. NCP create and restore ponds for great crested newts under the NSP District Licensing scheme. Monitoring of the partnership’s ponds already shows they are supporting great crested newts and a variety of freshwater invertebrates. What are our top tips on BNG for Local Planning Authorities? 🏡 Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) became mandatory in England this year. It’s an approach that aims to leave biodiversity in a measurably better state than before development took place. We’ve been working with Local Planning Authorities on how to include BNG and have noted three key learnings: 💡Be strategic - align with Local Nature Recovery Strategies for maximum impact and best use of finite staff resource 🤝 Work with others - join the Planning Advisory Service’s BNG sessions for peer support and resource sharing ➗ Divide tasks - focus on what is a “need to do” and what is a “nice to do” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eWuMJGV2 📷: Thakeham. Are you a housing developer in the Poole Harbour catchment area? 🏗️ We are pleased to announce that from 31 July 2024, you may be able to apply to Natural England for nutrient credits. One nutrient credit mitigates 1 kilogram (kg) of nitrogen pollution. Therefore, buying the required number of credits is one way for housing developers to meet the nutrient neutrality requirements within the planning process. Nutrient neutrality will help protect Poole Harbour and its internationally important wildlife, like the spoonbill, from additional nutrient pollution. Credits will be available to developers of any size who have submitted a planning application for a permanent residential development in the Poole Harbour catchment area. The application round opens at 10:00 on 31 July 2024 and closes at 23:55 on 27 August 2024. Find out more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eWcC6PbJ #NutrientMitigation #NutrientNeutrality #SustainableDevelopment #Poole

Calling all local planning authorities and developers 📢 We’ve launched a new tool to assist with planning applications. The Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Impact Risk Zones Tool helps local planning authorities (LPAs) and developers make an initial assessment of the potential risks to SSSIs posed by development to decide if further consultation with Natural England is needed. Our recent improvements to the tool include an instant consultation response for many lower risk consultations. By improving the user experience and benefits of getting instant advice from Natural England, we hope that more LPAs will use the tool. With a simpler, clearer and more efficient service, together we can focus on delivering positive outcomes for nature.
