𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐬 A microgrid is a local, delimited transmission grid that can be disconnected from the overlying grid when needed or desired and continue to be operated with locally produced or stored energy and is defined by three key characteristics: 𝟏. 𝐀 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥, this distinguishes microgrids from large, centralized grids. Centralized grids push electricity from power plants over long distances via transmission and distribution lines. Delivering power over long distances is inefficient because some of the electricity, up to 8 to 15 percent, is lost during transportation. 𝟐. 𝐀 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, a microgrid can be disconnected from the main grid and operate independently, acting as an “island”. This means that those connected to the microgrid can be supplied with electricity even in the event of a power outage in the main grid. 𝟑. 𝐀 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭, the intelligence of a microgrid comes from the microgrid controller, which is the central brain of the system and controls the generators, batteries and nearby building energy systems. The controller orchestrates multiple resources to meet the energy targets established by the microgrid’s customers. Such goals can be; lowest cost, cleanest energy, greatest electrical reliability or something else. 𝐇𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 Wish Outdoor is a festival with about 60.000 visitors over a whole weekend and more than 10 different areas. To provide this entire festival with power, 4 power plants have been placed over the entire site. Including 13 generators, around 100 distribution panels and more than 20km of cable. Power plant 1, consisting of 2x550kVA EU5 generators and 1x310kVA EU5 generator provided the power for the main stage and the associated bars. Power plant 2, consisting of 2x550kVA EU5 generators, 1x200kVA EU5 generator and 1x115kVA EU5 generator provided power for various areas including the Ferris wheel and one of the two food courts. Power plant 3, consisting of 2x250kVA generators and 1x150kVA generator, provided the power for food court one and the central square. Power plant 4, consisting of 2x275kVA generators and 1x150kVA generator supplied the VIP area and the grand theater with power. This year’s catering and production was powered by a 90kVA Caterpillar battery. The battery was charged with the help of a 63-ampere main power supply. It absorbed the peaks during lunch and dinner during the day and was recharged at night. As a result, no generator had to run during construction and decommissioning, which decreases both fuel and emissions. 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 We have been busy lately delivering power and temperature control to many festivals and events in Belgium, The Netherlands and Norway. One of these festivals is Paradise City in Belgium, a music festival that took place the 28th to the 30th of June. This festival has a very sustainable approach to energy delivery and prioritizes solutions with as little negative impact on the environment as possible and in collaboration with #ManaEventTeam we delivered the power solution. To be able to meet the requirements we delivered 4 x 400kVA batteries combined with our newest Stage V compliant generators in standby mode. By using batteries in a hybrid setup, we were able to achieve much lower emissions and noise levels. 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧 Stavernfestivalen is one of Norway’s biggest summer festivals and is held in Stavern, just outside Larvik at Larvik golf arena in Norway. This year, the festival took place from the 3rd to the 6th of July, extending it by one day. The festival needs a lot of power distributed to several locations since the festival area is approximately 80.000 square meters, which makes it the biggest music festival in Norway and for the last 15 years we have provided the power solution. This year, like last year, we provided a hybrid solution with batteries and generators in addition to ancillaries to ensure as low emissions as possible.
