Yesterday, the Federal Communications Commission voted to restore #netneutrality rules, ensuring broadband services are treated as an essential resource under Title II authority. This move from the US government will reverse the 2017 rollbacks. The #FCC's 3-2 vote to enact legislation and the preceding debate highlights sharply contested views on the best strategy to foster a digital society where connectivity is dependable, equitable, and universally accessible. Proponents of the FCC's decision champion the reinstatement as a vital step in ensuring the internet remains an open platform where both startups and established businesses can thrive equally. By reclassifying internet service providers (ISPs) as common carriers, the FCC aims to prevent practices harming the free flow of information, such as blocking or throttling data. Critics argue that the measures could pave the way for price controls and may actually suppress innovation. They highlight the FCC's historical reluctance to intervene with previous net neutrality oversight powers as a testament to the regulations' ineffectiveness. Furthermore, they emphasise periods when the industry effectively cooperated with lawmakers and the public to enhance accessibility, notably during the pandemic, suggesting that future net neutrality statutes amount to little more than an unnecessary obstacle hindering an already agreed upon collective goal. While the US has decided to embrace net neutrality once again, the topic continues to be debated globally. Different countries have adopted various stances, influenced by regulatory environments, market dynamics, and policy priorities. For example, the EU has been at the forefront of net neutrality legislation, with regulations in place that prevent ISPs from influencing traffic. Meanwhile, other nations have exceptions to neutrality when it comes to content that is deemed inappropriate, and countries like China and Australia have not imposed net neutrality at all. Striking a balance between establishing consistent global principles for net neutrality and allowing flexibility to accommodate local market conditions and regulatory environments adds another layer to what is already a complex topic. While the debate is an important one, it must be considered within the broader goal of improving connectivity. Arguments over ex anti-regulation, where reliance on competition and competition law is sufficient, may risk diluting the issue. It's crucial regulators keep their eyes on the ball and prioritise safeguarding innovation, competition, and accessibility online. What do you think is the best approach to support Net Neutrality? Is it self-regulation, similar to rules in the Caribbean, soft rules, like those adopted by Japan or South Korea, or hard regulation, like in the EU and US? Let us know in the comments. "Fibre is not a technical detail, it is an essential element of a modern ICT system. Without fibre, you do not have a modern economy, modern society.” Roberto Viola, Director General of the EC DG CNECT, took to the stage at #FTTHConference2024 this morning, and delivered a promising speech on the EU's commitment to a widespread deployment of Very-High-Capacity Networks (VHCNs).   FTTH Council Europe has released new figures today in its FTTH/B Market Panorama, which outlines the landscape for FTTH/B connections in the future. It is clear from Roberto's keynote that VHCNs sit at the centre of EU plans for digital development in the next decade and will be critical in ensuring the future success of FTTH/B uptake, as the copper switch-off continues. You can read more about the FTTH/B Market Panorama in Advanced Television here - https://lnkd.in/e4kahpkd   This year, FTTH Council Europe is making the copper switch-off and deployment of VHCNs a top priority, but we also need to see more from government and regulators to support this evolution of the telco industry. The acceleration of copper switch-off, towards a ubiquitous landscape of fibre broadband - alongside the emergence of 5G, AI and ML, edge computing, APIs, computer vision and NFV - has propelled the industry into a new era of innovation. Together, these technologies empower telco providers to adapt swiftly to emerging trends, create value-added services and meet the evolving demands of our digitally connected world. To maximise this opportunity, telcos need to architect their infrastructure and applications in a way that is optimised for speed and reliability. In a world where milliseconds matter, telcos must ensure their applications and services move as quickly as possible.   The telco ecosystem of the future will see the complete eradication of the typical breakdown in the flow of data, rules and instructions – where participants can truly collaborate and ultimately deliver on-demand, personalised, exceptional experiences to end-users. As Vitrifi tools up the industry with a new broadband operating system that enables a seamless data fabric for any network in the world – it will empower both buyside (ISPs/Retail Service Providers) and sellside (Network Owners/Operators) customers to modernise, transform, innovate and better serve individuals, businesses and society as a whole.   We have removed the tangled myriad of systems capex and massively broadened capability and cost-applicability. Furthermore, in being able to bring brand choice to subscribers across the plethora of disparate networks, Vitrifi will make a revolutionary impact on the current patchwork telco landscape.   If you’re at #FTTH24 Berlin and would like to hear more about our vision for transforming infrastructure architecture and the economics of connectivity, please get in touch.   #Fibre #Broadband #FTTH #NetworkTransformation
