About us
Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) helps transform cities to benefit the millions who lack access to water and sanitation. Urban migration is leading to a crisis in cities in developing countries, where millions of people lack access to the most basic of services. Already, nearly 900 million urban residents have no choice but to live in low-income communities – poorly built, often illegal settlements which usually do not have running water or clean sanitation facilities. Since cities will be the future habitat for many in developing countries, it is critical to invest in basic services and infrastructure. This is the reason why we were set up in 2005.

For more than ten years, Ms. Viju Daka lived in the peri-urban area of Burton in Zambia, facing daily struggles to #access water. Imagine living without a steady flow of clean water for a decade. It's a reality for countless people. However, Viju's life has transformed thanks to the support of Zambia's Southern Water & Sewerage Company (SWASCO) and WASSER FÜR WASSER (WfW) – WATER FOR WATER (WfW). "I am very excited to have a direct household water #connection for the first time in 10 years. There is water all day because before this, we would only have water available for a few hours, and on some days, there was no water from the kiosks we used to draw from. And now the pressure is always very high. This is a great project, and as a resident of Burton, I am pleased," says Viju. Her story is a testament to the incredible impact #sustainable water solutions can have on communities. It's not just about water; it's about #dignity, health, and the promise of a better future.

This project is part of our initiative to expand the local #water network with new pipes made with high-quality materials from Borealis. It is also part of our efforts to change approaches and systems to improve the lives of #Mozambique citizens through improved water access and reliability.

In Uganda, WSUP Advisory is making a splash by supporting the Umbrella Authorities (UAs). These UAs ensure clean, piped water access in numerous small towns and developing rural areas. Our impact extends beyond policy. We actively support projects like the construction of a water filtration facility in Bundibugiyo. This initiative, generously funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, is part of our broader efforts to strengthen the Mid-West Umbrella, a water distribution utility. This is just one example of how WSUP Advisory transforms lives in #Uganda. Together with The Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF), we are supporting Kenya's Nakuru Water and Sanitaiton Services Company (NAWASSCO) in significantly improving sanitation access and public health in the city. One of the things under this partnership is revising NAWASSCO's strategic business plan to prioritize #safely managed sanitation. The plan will incorporate a dual approach of sewered network expansion and upgrades and innovative non-sewered solutions like decentralized treatment systems, ensuring broader coverage while catering to the diverse needs of Nakuru's residents. Our collaborative approach with SHF is a good model for tackling complex sanitation challenges in #urban areas. Read more about what we are doing with SHF in Nakuru: https://lnkd.in/dt8V2dMD

We are committed to championing gender diversity and inclusion by showcasing women leaders in the water and sanitation sector. One such leader is Shramistha Debnath, an Executive Engineer at #Bangladesh's Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE). With a Master's degree from the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, she has studied the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions on Bangladesh's sanitation value chain. Her career began with addressing issues like arsenic contamination and climate change's effects on water in Bangladesh. We are dedicated to inspiring and supporting increased female leadership within the sector, a crucial step towards achieving gender diversity and inclusion. Master Sedrampitiavana Sedera, a student at EPP Mahamasina Primary School in Antananarivo, #Madagascar, proudly tends to his school garden—a unique WSUP project funded by an anonymous donor. As part of a school water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) project, Sedera and his schoolmates receive hygiene training and participate in sustainable activities like gardening and #recycling. His school implements waste sorting programs, creating compost and reusing greywater for irrigation. The school's 'green gardens' promote sustainability and ensure the project's financial #sustainability. They help the school generate income through selling produce and funding future small-scale WASH operations and maintenance.
