ALS is comprised of professionally qualified solicitors, barristers and Scottish advocates. The role of ALS is to provide legal support to the Army and wider Defence. ALS’ responsibilities are extensive, from giving legal advice on international, civil and military law and advising on operational law, the law of armed conflict and rules of engagement to prosecuting in the Court Martial. This weekend saw two new ALS Captains complete the challenging Commissioning Course Short at RMAS, congratulations to them both. The next part of their training involves a week of live firing at RMAS. After that, they will each spend three months with a combat arms unit, in a non-legal role, learning more about the Army and how it operates.

ALS lawyers prosecute cases at Court Martial, deploy on operations around the world and provide advice on a range of matters including health and safety, employment, and discipline. In between that, we keep up with our CPD through attendance at a number of internal and external courses, play sport for the AGC and the Army, and go on adventure training including skiing, cycling and hiking. Officers in the ALS have the opportunity for CPD at leading institutions in the UK and abroad - A number of ALS officers recently attended the IIHL in Sanremo to learn about the Law of Armed Conflict.
📢 On Monday, the Military Department launched the 189th International Military Course on the Law of Armed Conflict. The Course (6th - 17th November 2023) includes 58 participants, from 31 different countries, welcomed in Sanremo at the Villa Ormond. Five different classes have been created, three of them held in English, one in Russian and one in Chinese. The general aim of the course is to provide military officers, including operators and military lawyers, as well as civilians, with the opportunity to learn how to apply the principles and rules of international humanitarian law (IHL). At the end of the course, participants will have attained a sound knowledge of the principles and rules of IHL and will be able to apply these in a practical manner in a range of operational scenarios. We wish our participants well and hope that they will have an engaging and productive learning experience!

Over the weekend, ALS officers took part in services to mark Remembrance Day. Director ALS had the honour of standing in for CGS at the Armistice Day Ceremony held at the Cenotaph. Also, 10 ALS officers took part in the televised Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Officers of the Army Legal Services recently gathered together for a dinner to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the branch. We were delighted to be joined by honoured guests including our Colonel-in-Chief HRH The Duchess of Gloucester, previously serving members of the ALS, our friends from the wider Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, and legal professionals and academics.
