Hyundai Motor America has issued two recalls affecting 67,000 vehicles on July 11. One of the recalls is to address fuel pump failures, the other is for transmission rollaway risk on the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Out of the 67,000 vehicles, 54,647 were recalled for fuel pump failures. These models include the 2019-2022 Veloster N, 2019-2023 Genesis G70, 2022-2023 Elantra N, and 2022-2023 Kona N compact SUV.
According to the NHTSA, the fuel pump may fail on these models, which can result in a loss of drive power and increase the risk of a crash. Hyundai was first aware of the potential fuel pump problem a year ago. On July 19, 2023, Hyundai informed its North American Safety Office of a loss of power in some certain Hyundai and Genesis models sold in overseas markets.
Hyundai has confirmed 2,460 related incidents related to the fuel pump from May 10, 2019, through June 17, 2024 for vehicles in the U.S. market.
The preliminary findings by Hyundai engineers noted the presence of stored diagnostic fault code in the engine control unit indicating a potential rich air/fuel ratio control condition. Following these reports, the NASO’s Data Review Committee launched an investigation and began collecting field information for analysis.
After the investigation, Hyundai determined that a software error was causing the fuel pump problem. Dealers will update engine control module software in the recalled vehicles and inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly, if needed.
The second recall includes 12,349 model year 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs, which can roll away even while shifted into park. Hyundai cited a software error in the transmission control unit as the primary cause of inadvertent clutch engagement, which is estimated to be present in 100% of the recalled SUVs.
Hyundai was made aware of 45 rollaway incidents from June 3 through June 27, which led to the recall. Dealers will update transmission control unit software on the Santa Fe models and inspect and replace the dual clutch transmission, as necessary. According to its notice to dealers, the transmission could become damaged due to the software fault.
There are no associated crashes or injuries reported from any of the recalled vehicles. Owner notification letters for both recalls are expected to be mailed September 9 and the repairs will be made at no cost to customers.
