Olympic bronze medal swimmer on BBC Radio 5 live

I think Adam Peaty goes to bed tonight incredibly proud of himself. There is nothing that this guy has not done in the last ten years. In fact he's done it all more than twice; World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games.

He has been the talisman of the British team. He has faced the hardest fight he has ever had over the last two years, gone to the Olympic Games again and won a silver medal with his boy watching on. The crowning event of his career.

That was an amazing swim from Martinenghi. He took the opportunity and it was a scrap but, as we said beforehand, there was a lot of emotion around this race. He was all over it.

Equal second for Adam Peaty - brilliant!

Right at the end, you could actually see them all trying to time their last stroke right.

All that came down to was on the final stroke Adam Peaty had a slight glide heading into the wall, Nicolo Martinenghi didn't.

The Italian hit the wall and ended up winning it by milliseconds.

So close, but Adam Peaty comes up short.

The GB swimmer takes silver as Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi claims the gold.

The pair share an embrace across the lanes.

American Nic Fink shares silver with Peaty, coming in at exactly the same time - 59.05 seconds.

Germany's Melvin Imoudu will get bronze, while China's Qin Haiyang, one of the favourites, finishes down in seventh.

    Men's 100m breaststroke final

    Karen Pickering

Adam Peaty is so spurred on by missing the World Championships last year and watching the title go to Qin Haiyang. When you think of the difficulties he has been through, both physically and mentally, I didn't even know he would be competing at the trials or be in a position to compete at the Olympic Games.

He has put himself in this position. He is an incredible competitor and sounds like he is actually enjoying being back racing. To be back in with a chance to win a gold medal is incredible.

Peaty aiming to be 'fastest boy' in final

Adam Peaty is aiming to become the second man after the great American Michael Phelps to win the same individual event at three Games in a row.

The 29-year-old Briton cruised to his previous two Olympic golds, in 2016 and 2021, but has struggled with injury and his mental health since the last Games in Tokyo.

He took a break from the sport and considered stopping entirely and in his absence at last year’s World Championships Qin Haiyang emerged as a serious rival.

Qin swam a 57.69-second 100m last year, making him the second-fastest of all time behind Peaty and the quickest of anyone since Tokyo.

'Not only is this massive for Peaty but for the sport.'published at 20:50

    Men's 100m breaststroke

    Steve Parry
Olympic bronze medal swimmer on BBC Radio 5 live

This race is not only huge for Adam Peaty but it is also massive in the sport.

There has only been one other person that has managed to win a gold medal in an event three times, and that is the great man himself, Michael Phelps.

For a Brit, for our sport, for him to join the likes of Michael Phelps in that category it is absolutely massive.

We've said it plenty of times but Adam Peaty could do something very special by winning gold tonight.

It would make him on the second male swimming after Michael Phelps to win golds in the same event at three consecutive Olympics.

The great American is here too.

That was a brilliant swim from Oliver Morgan! The time to do it was then.

Particularly with Xu next to him, going out so quickly, he will have been getting a lot of the waves from his feet.

Brilliant from Great Britain's Ollie Morgan.

He nods his head in approval after finishing third, behind China's Xu Jiayu and Apostolos Christou of Greece.

That's enough for Morgan to reach the final as the seventh fastest across the two semi-finals.

I'm sure 'Bloody well done, son' is the gist of it.

Adam Peaty was once so dominant that he and his coach had to come up with projects where he was racing the clock.

Before Tokyo all the talk was about 'project 56' [beating the 56 seconds mark in this event]. It was a case of we know we are going to win so let's push the boundary.

Now he is racing people. This is the first time in a decade he is probably concerned about the people he is coming up against.

I never took the opportunity to go to a third Olympics because it was so, so difficult.

I just want people to appreciate the fact that Adam Peaty is a legend - no matter if he gets a gold, silver, bronze or no medal tonight!

What he has achieved in the sport is just amazing. He has literally changed breaststroke, he has changed history.

I just want him to come out tonight and just be happy, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the race. What will happen, will happen.

GB's Oliver Morgan is up next in the second semi. He goes in lane seven.
