India will take on Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 final on September 17. Both the teams are in good form and have managed to beat Pakistan, the third Asian giant in the tournament.

The first Asia Cup final clash - 1988-89

The first time the Men in Blue took on their southern neighbours in Asia Cup was back in Asia Cup 1988-89 where India emerged victorious easily by six wickets chasing a target of 177.

Asia Cup 1991: India wins again

A couple of years later, the two again clashed in the final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. India won again chasing 205 by seven wickets to spare.

Asia Cup 1995: India’s hattrick

The next time India and Sri Lanka clashed was in the 1995 Pepsi Asia Cup final held in Sharjah. India chased down a target of 231 with eight wickets to spare.

Asia Cup 1997: SL wins finally

Sri Lanka finally won against India in the Asia Cup final in 1997. This time India set a target of 240 which the Lankans chased down easily with eight wickets to spare. Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvin Atapattu and Arjuna Ranatunga all hit half centuries.

Asia Cup 2004: SL win again

The next Asia Cup final when the two neighbours clashed was in 2004 where the islanders won again defending a target of 229. India managed to get only 203 in the chase.

Asia Cup 2008: Sri Lanka’s hattrick

In 2008, Sri Lanka made it a hattrick of wins in the Asia Cup finals versus India. Sri Lanka set a target of 274 for India but the Men in Blue folded cheaply for a mere 173.

After three successive losses in Asia Cup ODI finals, India got back to winning the tournament again after setting a target of 269. This time the islanders folded cheaply for 187.
