Anthony Gordon: Liverpool ‘whispers’ intensify after ‘£100m’ reveal

Liverpool “whispers” about Antony Gordon are intensifying but they face a big battle to lure him from Newcastle United in the next five weeks.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton stated that the winger will be “key” to Newcastle’s success next season.

After months of speculation about his future, Howe has clarified that he doesn’t expect Gordon to depart St. James’ Park this summer.

Liverpool and Man City have been in the market to sign the 23-year-old this summer, but the Magpies look set to retain the player.

Football Insider had previously revealed the North East giants were looking for a package of up to £100million to consider selling Gordon this summer.

However, Howe’s priority has always been to retain the England international heading into next season.

Newcastle United will rely on Anthony Gordon next season

Gordon was a vital part of Newcastle’s campaign last season after scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists, showcasing his importance to the team.

He’s also not the only major star expected to be sticking around next season, as it’s believed Newcastle will retain Alexander Isak despite speculation about his future.

“He’s done really well since he’s signed for the club,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“Not only that, breaking into the England national team as well, your profile [is] just rising all the time.

“He was terrific last season, he gives you that energy, the willingness to run forward to take players on.

“For players like that, there’s always going to be teams that are sniffing about, obviously I’ve heard whispers about Liverpool, it’s going to be big money.

“I mean, Newcastle paid a lot of money for him so we will have to wait and see how it develops.

“I would never say never, but I think he’s going to be key for them next season, as well as a few others.

“They need to hold onto them to build around them if they want to go back into that top four again.”
