You need to simulate traffic for a project. What software should you use?

As a transport consultant, I always start with the process of understanding what question that the clients want to answer with the traffic simulation. Then I help the clients to translate their objectives into traffic simulation process, to define the scope of simulation in both geographical and temporal, the analysis criteria, and the method. Then I usually cooperate with the client to obtain the data source needed for the simulation.

Area of Impact is the first point. If your project only impacts one or two junctions then junction packages such as Junctions10, Linsig or Transyt may be sufficient. If you need to consider interaction between junctions or detailed vehicle behaviour then microsimulation is likely to be needed (Vissim, Aimsun, Paramics). If you need to consider routing across a region then you're looking at strategic modelling packages (Cube, Emme, Saturn, Visum). Bigger scale means bigger cost and also less detail so it's important to identify the needs up front.

You may need to look at the following based on your requirements - List of software approved by the client - Capability to simulate the specific traffic conditions: e.g. mixed traffic conditions - Realistic simulation of traffic control - Ease of integration with external data sources - Ease of integration with third-party software for co-simulation - Cost and skillsets of your team Open source software, SUMO, is an excellent choice given the above if it is approved by the client.

And most importantly, whether the simulation software is able to replicate local driving behaviour or not ! VISSIM is most common tool used for simulating the urban network. It can replicate Indian Driving behaviour. It provides detailed modelling of individual vehicles, making it suitable for assessing complex traffic scenarios, driving behaviour, road side frictions, heterogeneous traffic conditions, and signal optimization.

It is not about selecting the software YOU want to use but rather you need to ask what software does the approving authority accept as valid

Wissim are the best for so far for microscopic and mesoscopic models.. however, transmodeller was developed well recently , and syncro is another good options, all have different merits for example Although Wissim is good for certain merits however it is very much data hungary.. and its visual capabilities are unnecessary luxury..

As others have stated, it is important to understand the application the model will be used for, before selecting the software you use. In some situations, other constraints may play a part in this decision making process, such as budget, program and the type of available data. For traffic signals, Linsig provides really good results for a range of applications from simple sites through to small networks of signals.

El software que usamos nosotros (no voy a dar marcas) destaca por su capacidad para modelar emisiones, por sus opciones de modelado detallado y gestión inteligente del tráfico, lo que lo convierte en una opción muy interesante aunque de precio algo elevado. El segundo softare más usado a nivel mundial tiene una herramienta gratuita centrada en la simulación estadística de tráfico, ideal para análisis específicos en intersecciones que es muy práctica. El tercero del que quiero hablar proporciona una solución enfocada en el control y modulación del tráfico, que tiene tambien algunas opciones versátiles para ajustar densidad y temporización de semáforos. Cada software tiene su enfoque y utilidad dependiendo de cómo sea el proyecto.

Está claro que ningún modelo es perfecto. Sin embargo, se debe optar por aquel software que cubra las necesidades del proyecto y proporcione datos que sirvan a los tomadores de decisiones para discernir cual es la mejor solución técnica. También, se debe tomar en cuenta la región, contexto del proyecto, y cuál es el software que más se usa en el ámbito local, así será más sencillo el intercambio de información entre los involucrados y se podrá tener un seguimiento temporal del proyecto.

Once we have the objectives sorted and an idea of the data available, the specific indicators to assess/monitor and an idea of the extent of the project (spatial and temporal). It is easier to select a suitable software depending on its data requirements, and the type of results we want to achieve in the region of interest. Local modelling guidelines available/applicable in the region would also help to assess the software's application in the industry. In some cases specific requirements from the client or regulatory authorities may also guide the selection of software due to ease of information exchange and local expertise.

El software elegido, además de cumplir con las necesidades básicas de integración, soporte post venta, almacenamiento, presentación de dashboard para la toma de desciones, costo de mantenimiento y soporte adecuado entre otros. Considero que es necesario que brinde la capacidad futura de adaptación y modulación al cambio de variables, tanto en la línea de macro a micro o viceversa, porque el análisis futuro, llevará a replantear mejoras que requerirán más análisis.

Una vez que tengas la información necesaria podrás evaluar si el software que estás utilizando cumple con el objetivo que tienes planeado para poder tener los resultados que te generan la confianza y la seguridad de seguir utilizando lo o de cambiar a otro software , que sea más amable y fácil al utilizarlo que te facilite el trabajo y que te arrojo la información seguro y verídica para cumplir con los objetivos trazados .

Es importante incluir el tiempo de capacitación necesario para la utilización del software, así como el perfil de las personas que lo usaran ya que esto puede ser un factor de retraso en el futuro. Un software que requiere un número de horas elevado para su uso tendrá un costo más alto de implementación

Take enough time testing the software and appoint appropriate project training coordinators. Evalute the testing in separate teams then on a larger scale (business unit etc.)

Cuando recibes información del uso del Software, sabiendo el tipo de actividad que realizas, ya percibes que es necesario para desarrollar el trabajo, rapidez para el ahorro de tiempo, opciones para no realizar el trabajo 2 veces, informaciones útiles que se puedan ver a simple vista para tener el control.

Performance is less and less an issue with modern simulation software. The biggest thing to ask is : will the chosen software let you go through your workflow in the right timeframe? Software performance is less an issue than user performance.

Validation of the results is always important. The validation data can be obtained from field survey or from historical datasets.

Salvo en el caso de simulaciones amplias y complejas, algo que es poco frecuente debido a la dificultad de acometer grandes reestructuraciones del tráfico rodado en una ciudad, todos los software que usamos nosotros realizan el análisis de forma ágil. Por otro lado es cierto que es necesario usar ordenadores de suficiente potencia de cálculo para manejar los requerimientos de los software de modelado, sin embargo, un PC con un proceso Intel i7, con 16GB de memoria RAM y una tarjeta gráfica dedicada profesional debe ser más que suficientemente en todos los casos. Algo que siempre comprobamos es la consistencia del modelo, en donde esperamos obtener resultados idénticos bajo las mismas condiciones y datos de partida.

Use the selected software to evaluate the existing conditions and simulate to compare with observations such as queue length and vehicle throughputs.

Puedes probar el rendimiento que te da el software siempre y cuando lo estés actualizando también podrías hacer comparaciones haciendo claculos manuales que se acerquen a los resultados que te está dando el software así podrás evaluar el rendimiento

Ultimately, the choice depends on your project's specific needs and goals.

If the project needs something more than a junction model (4-stage, strategic highway assignment, or meso/micro area model) then the first step isn't to compare software, it's to identify existing models and stakeholder requirements. In particular if you need approval from a roads authority, they may require use of their existing model. This may also save significant costs although you may be tied in to a specific company to run the models for you.

Para poder evaluar el tráfico de un proyecto es necesario utilizar herramientas que puedan analizar los datos obtenidos y tener los resultados completos , podrías utilizar Adobe Analytics ya que es un servicio especializado de análisis en tiempo real , el objetivo de esto es detectar perspectivas y abordar problemas .
