  • Lauren Angeloni here! Hope everyone is having a great Summer so far. It seems like many of you are traveling on vacation, hopefully recharging and energizing for what will be a busy Fall. We are already deep into planning our next season of the Communicator Awards, which I can’t wait to launch. We’re also headed into the Davey Awards' final deadline next week, so you still have some time to get your best work in. Also next week, I’m excited to see some of you in Boston for the AdAge Small Agency Conference. If you didn’t get our email about meeting up, please let me know! This week’s talking points brought to you by my missing Sous Vide Egg Bites: Many of us had a rocky start this morning, with fleets of grounded planes, snarled banking systems and, perhaps slightly less distressing, Starbucks mobile ordering going down, due to CrowdStrike’s massive outage, affecting Microsoft Systems. I think the breadth of the impact is still unfolding, but I hope that my aforementioned summer travelers are weathering the storm.  Also in the "uncomfortable tech" camp, an unsanctioned Volvo Group commercial generated entirely using AI got some attention this week, with the creator hitting Ad Age to give tips on harnessing the text-to-video platform Runway’s newest model, Gen-3. Marketing Dive published a report this week on the continuing trend of companies shelling out money on rebranding and redesigning packages rather than splashy ad campaigns. I imagine this is a divisive topic among my community, which is populated by many brand designers  and as many ad campaign geniuses. Speaking of rebranding, here is a huge one: Media.Monks announced this week that is is now simply “Monks” in an effort to represent more authentically the org’s core offerings, which are now reorganized around a marketing services and a technology services arm. Continuing the vibe from the Michael Cera’s Superbowl ad, L'Oréal is doubling down on entertaining branded content with a CeraVe Soap Opera, bringing melodrama to skin-care education. (via ADWEEK) In content I’m generally excited about, Apple TV + is releasing (today!) a docuseries Omnivore, which centers on the brilliant noma chef Rene Redzepi unpacking the full cultural context and impact of seemingly simple staple ingredients. I’m holding my breath on the fallout from the Paris Olympics Seine Swim stunt performed by Paris Mayor, Ann Hidalgo. Organizers have been plagued by complaints that the e coli contaminated river wasn’t being cleaned up quickly enough. The mayor wanted to prove that the Seine was ready for the world stage… i just hope this doesn’t end poorly. The unfortunate #jechiedanslaSeine trended on social media ahead of the swim, which I truly hope was all talk. See some of you in Boston next week and hope to see even more of you in the Davey Awards Submissions before next Friday's Deadline!
