All students experience a higher level of positive educational outcomes when we: Recruit and hire effective educators that are representative of the student population Provide meaningful induction and professional development opportunities Provide effective support and mentoring Actively recognize excellent educators Amherst County Public Schools is located in the Piedmont Region positioned between the borders of the James River to the south and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the north. This Pre-K through 12th grade division serves a diverse population of over 3900 students and 700 employees. It consists of one comprehensive, four year high school that offers college preparatory, general and special education, as well as career and technical cooperative education courses. It has two middle schools that provide students courses for career pathways and advanced curriculum, along with six elementary schools focused on building the foundational skills needed for success. Additionally, Amherst Education Center provides an alternative program for struggling students, a GED program, and an Alternative to Suspension program to support increased student behavioral success. Academic performance in the areas of reading and math across the division are strong. Over the past two school years, ACPS has achieved fully accredited status through the Virginia Department of Education. With all schools fully accredited, our focus of Every Child, Every Day is more than just a motto; it is the belief system that makes Amherst County Public Schools one of the top school systems in the region.

  • Amherst County High School Receives 2023-2024 Board of Education Continuous Improvement Award Amherst County Public Schools is proud to announce Amherst County High School as a recipient of the 2023-2024 Virginia Board of Education’s Exemplar Performance Award in the category of Continuous Improvement. This prestigious accolade, bestowed upon only 27 schools statewide, celebrates institutions that have demonstrated significant progress and growth in academic and school quality indicators over the 2022-2023 school year and prior school years. The Virginia Board of Education’s Exemplar Performance School Recognition Program seeks to honor schools that surpass board-established performance benchmarks or exhibit continuous improvement in their educational practices. Through rigorous evaluation and assessment, Amherst County High School has proven its dedication to fostering excellence in education and ensuring the success of its students. Amherst County High School’s achievement is a reflection of its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and the development of its students. The school’s leadership, educators, and support staff have worked tirelessly to implement effective strategies and initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning outcomes and fostering a culture of excellence. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Amherst County High School for this well-deserved recognition,” said Superintendent Dr. William Wells. “Their dedication to continuous improvement serves as an example of how we cultivate excellence in Every Child, Every Day.   • May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so we want to take this opportunity to acknowledge our many mental health partners for supporting our students and their families this school year. Special thanks to our fantastic School Counselors and the School-Based Mental Health workers in our buildings. We are also fortunate to have formed grant partnerships with The Madeline Centre, Horizon Behavioral Health, and Life Push.
