BPS Division of Coaching Psychology (Main)

A bit of a delayed post, but I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who made my first BPS Division of Coaching Psychology (Main) Conference such a wonderful experience. Huge thanks in particular to Mary-Jane Budd who not only chaired the conference committee, but made me feel so welcome. It was a packed two days of keynotes, best practice sessions and round tables, combining evidence and practice. I came away both inspired and exhausted (the signs of an excellent conference!), and with over 6,000 words of notes I’d taken, which I’m still reflecting on. Some of the key takeaways for me were around trust, particularly in ND coaching, the use of green-blue spaces and whether I can build this in to my own coaching more, the role of supervision and peer learning (I will be joining a PPG!), and ACT. I won’t tag people, as I will inevitably forget someone and feel guilty(!), but I must thank Dr Jemma Harris Bawden for the amazing job she did as conference photographer – capturing one of me looking smiley and eager to start before the conference duties commenced! 

Very excited to be presenting a poster at the BPS Division of Coaching Psychology Annual Conference on Thursday! Last time I presented a poster was in 2008 - I just checked! Something I'm looking forward to revisiting. Always fun to chat research with passers-by while they're eating cake! I have to say, I had forgotten how anxiety-provoking it is to see your handiwork in all its A1, technicolour glory for the very first time, but no giant gaffes spotted in the hard copy of this one...yet... If you're going to be at the DoCP, come over and say hi! Charlotte Housden (Sheridan) and I have some preliminary results to share of our exploratory study which looked at how we can support coaches to bridge the gap between research and practice. I’ve been fortunate to have great role models in my supervisors Netta Weinstein and Christian van Nieuwerburgh who inspired in me the benefits of “collaboration” in research. It was wonderful to bring together a team of Coaching Practitioners, & “Pracademics” Sally W. Lorna Mills CPsychol, AFBPsS Kate Brassington (she/her) MSc. GMBPsS. PCC(ICF) Carla Henry GMBPsS Afsar Ali MAPPCP, EMCC Senior Practitioner Robert Stephenson to work on a coaching research project that we started in January. Being able to co-present the project & how we collaborated at the BPS Division of Coaching Psychology (Main) conference last week was the icing on the cake to our collective efforts. Our aim was to inspire people to do more research – whether you’re a researcher, a “pracademic” or a practitioner – there is a role for all and we can all help to advance coaching as a profession. And feedback from the session is that we achieved exactly that so that’s a win in our books 🙌😊🫶 #bpsdocpconf2024 #coachingpsychology #pracademic #coaching

Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting my research at the The British Psychological Society BPS Division of Coaching Psychology (Main) Annual Conference. Despite facing several challenges during my presentation—including a delayed start due to the previous presentation running over time, the absence of presenter view notes on the laptop, and misunderstanding the signal about the remaining time—I was honoured to receive the award for Best Original Paper. This recognition was particularly surprising given my perception of how terrible I thought my presentation went. Here is a link to the my recent published article. Langford Watts, C.
