Google's “keeping cookies” announcement means web advertising is facing catastrophe. I think it was Paul Bannister back in April who I first heard suggest Google would throw their hands up in the face of the UK CMA’s pushback of Privacy Sandbox and just kill cookies with no alternative. That’s essentially what Google’s “informed prompt” will do to web measurement. Eric Seufert's recent post pointed out that 15% of users opt-in to tracking post Apple’s ATT prompt. Not enough. Without reliable measurement, current advertising doesn’t work. Google Privacy Sandbox has a long way to go and opt-ins aren’t enough.
