About us
Central Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. is South Carolina’s generation and transmission electric cooperative, providing power to South Carolina’s 19 distribution cooperatives. These cooperatives ultimately serve over 1.5 million member-consumers. Central primarily purchases the power it supplies to its members through long-term power supply contracts. In addition, Central constructs and maintains transmission lines located throughout the state.

Central Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. is proud to announce that its board of directors has appointed A Berl Davis as board chair to succeed Paul Basha. Berl has served on the Central board since 2014. As the President and CEO of Palmetto Electric Cooperative, Inc. since 2014, Berl has led significant initiatives that have driven progress and innovation in South Carolina’s energy sector. Prior to his current role, he served in various key positions at Palmetto Electric and South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G). He has held numerous chairmanships including at the Cooperative Electric Energy Utility Supply, Inc. (CEEUS), Line Equipment Sales Company (LE), and the The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc. (ECSC). He is also the current Chairman of the Don Ryan Center for Innovation, a board member of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, and past chair of NRECA’s Cooperative Research Network Distribution Best Practices Membership Advisory Group and its Transmission and Distribution Underground Subcommittee. Most recently, Berl was appointed to the South Carolina Power Team Board of Trustees, which is comprised of electric cooperative CEOs and Trustees representing individual cooperatives across the state. His past contributions also include roles with the United Way of the Lowcountry, Beaufort County Economic Development Corporation Board, and advisory positions for Junior Achievement and the Boy Scout Explorer program. Berl received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University and is a graduate of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Management Internship Program from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a native of Ridgeland, SC and current resident of Bluffton, SC.

Central was a proud sponsor of the 2024 Laurens Electric Cooperative charity golf tournament held on June 24 at the HOLLY TREE COUNTRY CLUB in Simpsonville, SC. Event proceeds benefit the Cooperative Caring program and the Community Impact Initiative. ✅ The Cooperative Caring program assists members who face difficulties paying their electric bills and has helped more than 2,500 families so far. ☑️ The Community Impact Initiative provides grants of up to $2,000 to local charities. Recipients are selected by local chambers of commerce for projects that include innovative, creative, and practical solutions to community needs. Central is honored to contribute to these meaningful causes and remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen our community.

Underserved areas of Pickens County will soon get access to high-speed internet through Upcountry Fiber, a broadband partnership between BLUE RIDGE ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE INC and WCFIBER. The project will extend Upcountry Fiber’s broadband service – which reaches blazing-fast speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second – to approximately 7,700 more Upstate households and businesses by the end of 2025. Central was a proud sponsor of The LIGHT Foundation’s 6th Annual Golf for Good Tournament hosted by the Lynches River Electric Cooperative on June 7 at the White Plains Golf Course in Pageland, SC. Event proceeds support local residents in need and community-based organizations in Lancaster, Kershaw and Chesterfield Counties. The LIGHT Foundation is a volunteer-run registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2017 by Lynches River Electric Cooperative employees. It aims to improve the quality of life for local residents and support groups and organizations already making a positive impact in the community. Introducing the Optiwatt mobile app, an electric vehicle charging management platform and key component of South Carolina Electric Cooperatives' EV Charging Program. This innovative tool allows utilities to control charging, manage electric load and support the grid. This will assist electric cooperatives in keeping energy costs low, maintaining grid reliability and continuing to provide excellent service to members. To participate, members of participating co-ops may simply connect their EV to the Optiwatt mobile app or desktop app and enable the SC Electric Cooperatives EV Charging enrollment.
