    I've heard grumblings that Tim Sweeney is not pleased with the number of Fortnite Creative developers entering the ecosystem. After doing some digging, I can understand why. 💸 Last month Epic Games announced that they had paid out $120 million to creators after six months ($240 million annualized) since the launch of UEFN and Creator Economy 2.0. Epic's goal for increasing payouts by 5x is to incentivize creation of new game genres that attract new audiences to Fortnite - after all, Fortnite is primarily college-age men today. 🃏 However, so far there have been few breakthrough successes and there's only one new game genre in the top 25 charts as of last week: "Fort Who", a digital card game by spankysully based on the famous Hasbro card game, Guess Who? A couple weeks ago, I sat down with spankysully (Kyle Sullivan) and Anne-Margot Rodde from Creator Corp to understand what drives success for a studio innovating in the Fortnite ecosystem. 🤯 Surprisingly, the Creator Corp team has found that the most important thing driving discovery is not the quality of the game, but rather the conversion rate of the thumbnail icon on the Fortnite discovery page. (That means clicking on the game icon is more important than the time players spend in the game or how frequently they return to the game.) While Epic Games surely has it's reasons for prioritizing thumbnail conversion, they will need to ensure that developers believe their success is tied to the quality of their games, rather than a catchy thumbnail if they are to achieve the goals outlined above.
