In the following FenderBender article, DataTouch Managing Director Pete Tagliapietra discusses how to protect estimate repair information from being sold by third-party companies. Tagliapietra said the typical collision repair shop will interact with several vendors, many of which have data pumps installed on the shops’ computer systems and automatically take a copy of an estimate when it is created. "...typically, the installed data pump won’t just take a copy of the estimate that it needs to complete the business transaction. It takes a copy of every estimate that’s on the shop’s computer system, and we believe, in the best interest of protecting the shops’ information, that this is a major fundamental flaw.” Data Pump Manager was designed to share only the correct estimate and needed repair information to conduct business with each service provider. DataTouch announced today the commercial release of the “Data Pump Manager,” a new technology that provides control over software data pumps that have been installed on a shop computer system(s). Data Pump Manager is designed to share only the correct estimate and needed repair information to conduct business with each service provider. “Installed data pumps on a shop computer system do not exert control to copy only the estimate that is relevant to the transaction,” said Pete Tagliapietra, managing director of DataTouch. “Each installed data pump typically takes a copy of every estimate that is created by the shop, using the estimating system software.” Tagliapietra explained that the Data Pump Manager, like the other software security tools offered by DataTouch, successfully interacts with all three estimating systems and does not disrupt the collision shop’s current workflow. Did you know that every estimate that you share provides third parties with all of the operational information about your business? Some companies you may do business with compile estimate data and sell it for additional profit. This includes information that identifies your direct repair programs (DRPs), collision repair networks (CRNs), parts suppliers, discounts, labor rates by insurance company, and so much more. All of this is taking place today without your knowledge and consent. How can you stop sending the complete estimate to the various trading partners you do business with?
