Scalability is one of the guiding principles of DIU 3.0 and the mission to deliver outsized strategic impact and technology innovation across the United States Department of Defense. “Our efforts are about taking innovation and connecting it with scale so we can get to impact,” said Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) Director Doug Beck, speaking during the recent The Aspen Institute National Security Forum. Efforts to enable scaling includes DIU staffing embeds across the combatant commands, engaging across the DoD with the engines of scale, and with a diverse cadre of companies within the commercial technology sector, here in the U.S. and abroad The discussion, “Start-ups to the Rescue: The Next-gen Industrial Base,” highlighted some of the opportunities and continued challenges working with the DoD. Great to see a growing group of DIU portfolio companies and other startups working in this area that attended this event! The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for IE and Leidos held a ribbon-cutting to introduce “Service Base Charging” for DIU’s Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) project that was prototyped at Dover Air Force Base. Service Base Charging integrates physical and digital infrastructure to enable cost effective, efficient, resilient power and service delivery systems. Base and facility personnel driving government and private EVs can now charge up and use charge cards to transact at point-of-sale on base. This effort was initiated in August 2023 to deploy 32 Level 2 chargers (64 ports), 1 Level 3 charger (2 ports) and one 500 kW Battery Energy Storage System that can now transition at bases around the country. Additional exciting project updates coming soon. #energy #ElectricVehiclePower

Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), along with partners with Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), AgEagle Aerial Systems Inc., Auterion Government Solutions, AX ENTERPRIZE, LLC, Skydio, and Somewear Labs, recently conducted flight operations while enabling critical data sharing via a multi-network device. The three-day event was held at a 300-acre NY UAS Test Site test site, and demonstrates the future of airspace management for drones to securely operate anywhere in the world. The flights evaluated the integration of select Blue Unmanned Aerial System (#UAS) platforms with the Collaborative Low-Altitude UAS Integration Effort (CLUE) Uncrewed Traffic Management (UTM) system. This system, developed by AFRL, provides a way to enable the safe, secure, and efficient operations of UAS within the national airspace system through testing on this FAA-designated UAS test site. "As the usage of small UAS aiding warfighting functions continues to expand, it is becoming increasingly important to confidently distinguish between trusted UAS for DoD missions and UAS in our airspace," said David Michelson, Autonomy Portfolio Director at DIU. Expeditionary Hydrogen On Ship & Shore (EHOSS) solicitation just posted! The U.S. Military’s ability to operate effectively in austere environments is directly tied to its logistical capabilities. The use of hydrogen (H2) as an alternate fuel source could partly mitigate these challenges. The DoD seeks to prototype an integrated electrolysis-based H2 production, storage and distribution system capable of producing and dispensing a minimum of 20kg H2 in a 24 hour period at an efficiency using 100kW or less power. For details on the potential solution please visit: https://lnkd.in/dckjHGVy Solutions requested by 7/25/2024 #hydrogen #energy
