Huge congratulations to Jeramy Katchuba for receiving the patriot award for the organizations commitment to working with the military. We are excited to welcome back Alex Gugala to the Duluth Area Family YMCA after nearly a year of deployment! Alex has been with the U.S. Marine Reserves for 11 years and has been a continuous leader at the Duluth YMCA for over four years! We are proud to support our military members and staff and are honored to be recognized for supporting employee participation in America's National Guard and Reserve Force.

The Duluth Area Family YMCA has been awarded the highest honor for abuse prevention practices from Praesidium, an organization specializing in preventing sexual abuse in organizations that serve youth and vulnerable adults. The Duluth Area Family YMCA said the Praesidium Accreditation for Abuse Prevention reaffirms the organization’s unwavering commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment for all members, staff, and program participants. According to the Duluth YMCA, pursuing Praesidium Accreditation creates a path to align the organization’s mission and values with best practices in abuse prevention, along with providing written resources to strengthen prevention efforts and consultation with Praesidium experts. The Duluth YMCA is one of the first 40 Ys in the country to receive the accreditation, along with being the first in Minnesota. The accreditation was a eleven-month-long process that started with a review of policies and procedures, an onsite inspection, and then full implementation. “Receiving the Praesidium Accreditation reflects our commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of everyone in our YMCA and our community ,” says Cheryl Podtburg, Risk and Safety Manager at the Duluth Area Family YMCA . “As an organization that prides themselves on Social Responsibility, spending this time to ensure our policies align with our mission enforces our daily commitment to safe spaces FOR ALL.” The accreditation is renewed every three years and is one of the ways The Duluth Area Family YMCA works to uphold its mission of promoting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, according to the organization.
