I've always been impressed by Peter Drucker, but today my respect for him went up a couple of notches. I ran across an old HBR article written by Drucker in early 1988: "The Coming of the New Organization," where he predicted leadership challenges that organizations would face as the world entered the "Information Age" (that sounds like an old phrase, doesn't it?). One quote stood out in particular: "The information-based organizations will also pose its own special management problems. I see as particularly critical: 1 - Developing rewards, recognition, and career opportunities for specialists. 2 - Creating unified vision in an organization of specialists. 3 - Devising the management structure for an organization of task forces. 4 - Ensuring the supply, preparation, and testing of top management people." As Drucker predicted in the 36-year old article, today we're struggling to meet these challenges effectively because, in large part, our management approach hasn't sufficiently adapted. In short, we're using pre-Information Age approaches to manage workers that are informational specialists by birth. Using Drucker's terminology, we're trying to manage teams of specialists in now-flat organizations using old, command-and-control leadership approaches. And (I'm just guessing here) the information-based marketplace is changing faster and becoming more VUCA-ish now than even Drucker himself could have imagined. It's no wonder that cultural and social specialists entering the marketplace (i.e. Millennials and GenZs) feel out of phase from the management approach of the organizations they hire into. What I Learned This Week: Last Year's Faith Is Insufficient for This Year's Journey I created this graphic a few weeks ago to use as my phone's wallpaper and my computer's background. It's my operating theme for 2024. Much of this is based on my faith perspective, in that I sensed the Lord impressing upon me that there are things coming this year that will require more. More FROM me: more dedication, more trust, more focus and discipline. Paradoxically, I sense that these things will require less OF me: less self-interest, self-will, ego and personal desires. Less is more, I guess... This week has been an odd confirmation of those impressions. My transformation isn't yet complete, and I can't coast on last year's experiences, achievements, disciplines and perspectives. My future and the role I am to play is in front of me, not behind me. To the degree I can encourage you, I invite you to join me in this perspective. It's not fun riding a long, lonely highway all by yourself. Who's with me on this? #AreYouWhoYouWantToBe #leadershipdevelopment #culture #leadershipidentity #leadyourself #purpose

Get clarity to lead and manage yourself and your team effectively. Executive Coach, Author and Disciple-Making Movement Practitioner

We live in a time that authorizes, incentives and rewards productivity: Get more done in less time. Productivity tells us that the better we are at checking "done" on tasks and major initiatives, the more we're rewarded. And if we can do them ahead of time and under budget we get promoted. Getting things done is, of course, important. But from a leadership perspective, they aren't the MOST important. We have to remember that it's possible to get stuff done—even under budget and ahead of time—and fry people in the process. People can get used up, burned out, overlooked and disengaged. While some might get rewarded, continuing to run your life, your team or your business with a productivity-first approach is ultimately a road to frustration. Because at some point, you can't do more in less time ... no matter how hard you work. What would your life, your team or your business look like if being EFFECTIVE were your top priority? Being effective, by the way, has a component of productivity. But it's only a component. Please chime in on this. Agree? Think this perspective is half-baked? Let me know why... #WorkplaceWellness #leadyourself #purpose #leadershipdevelopment #culture #leadershipmindset #newmindset

Helping Leaders Create a Business that Gives Them The Life They Want!

As a coach for leaders and business teams for over 15 years, I have met many individuals who express dissatisfaction with their careers, and I have noticed some similarities between all of them: ✨ They share a sense of unfulfillment in their professional lives ✨ They find it very easy to brush aside these feelings and continue on the same path ✨ Eventually, and many times unnoticeable, that feeling leaks to all aspects of their lives ✨ When neglected they will lead to long-term discontentment Remember, acknowledging and addressing feelings of career dissatisfaction is crucial for personal growth and passion. It's a fact! By confronting these emotions head-on, I've seen individuals explore new opportunities, discover passions, and pursue paths that align with their true aspirations. Don't ignore those nagging feelings of dissatisfaction in your career. #EntreResults #BusinessSuccess #CoachingExcellence #teamcoaching #leadershipdevelopment
