According to a recent report by Prison Policy Initiative, there are currently 190,600 incarcerated women in the United States, roughly 10 percent of the total population of people in prison or jail. In this report, Prison Policy Initiative pulled together data from a number of government agencies to provide a breakdown of the number of women and girls held at each correctional system, by specific offense.
