Initiative of 90+ partner agencies and parents improving the health and well-being of families in our region
About us
First 1,000 Days Suncoast is a tri-county initiative in southwest Florida comprised of 90 partner organizations and parents working collaboratively to improve the health and well-being of babies and families in Sarasota, Manatee, and DeSoto counties. Following the Collective Impact model, the region’s public community hospital was designated as the backbone organization, with a nurse-led team guiding the operations. A steering committee, with leaders of regional nonprofits and foundations, ensures tactical alignment with county priorities, and has been key in building a strong partner infrastructure. Three key components guide the activities of the initiative: care coordination; parent empowerment; and targeted interventions. Through collaboration with community professionals and parents, the initiative identifies the most pervasive barriers to care for families and develops innovative solutions. This method has led to system-wide transformations, organization-specific enhancements, and process improvements.

On May 20th, 218 parents and professionals gathered to discuss three of First 1,000 Days Suncoast's long term indicators: prenatal care, severe maternal morbidity, and infant mortality. Breakout sessions by county shed light on the barriers families face in our community, explored existing successful programs, and identified opportunities to improve our system of care in Sarasota, Manatee, and DeSoto counties. From this discussion a matrix will be developed and opportunities will be prioritized which will build our strategic plan. We are so grateful for the many partners that contributed to this very successful webinar! A huge shout out of appreciation to Kelly Romanoff, with Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and steering co-chair of First 1,000 Days, for kicking us off and sharing the history of our work and energizing us on the "why" this is so important. https://lnkd.in/eYYWP39W

Check out the opinion piece written by Initiative Manager, Dr. Chelsea Arnold, on how First 1,000 Days at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is focusing on health equity. "Tonika’s experience is a testament that by reducing undue social stress and connecting families with resources, we can not only improve birth outcomes and enhance child health and development, but also support parents as advocates within their own communities. This is where we start, and this is where we can rebuild a better community that provides safe and equitable care for marginalized families. Together, with parents leading the way, I know we can make a difference for families for generations to come."
