Food Lifeline is excited to recognize its 2024 Food Frenzy Sponsors for this quarter’s Corporate Spotlight! Last year, Food Lifeline served more than 1.6 million people in Western Washington, 30% of which were children. When kids are away from school in the summer, many lose access to free meals, putting a strain on budgets already stretched thin. This year’s Food Frenzy Sponsors have all taken a leading role in helping families facing hunger during these challenging summer months. For two action packed weeks from July 12-26, these 15 companies, along with dozens of others, are collecting food donations, volunteering at the Hunger Solution Center, and hosting fundraisers that benefit Food Lifeline. Through their support, we’re able to get nutritious food into the communities that need it most, helping to relieve some of the financial burden and stress faced by many families this time of year. We thank all of these sponsors for their partnership in bridging the summer meals gap and supporting our mission to end hunger. Sound Community Bank, State Farm, Hoffman Construction Company, Symetra, Sweeney Conrad, P.S., Cushing Terrell, Summit Law Group, Seed IP Law Group, Fox Rothschild, JPC Architects, Seyfarth Shaw LLP, Greystar, PitchBook, KPFF Consulting Engineers, PACE Engineers, Inc.
About us
Feeding people facing hunger today and solving hunger for tomorrow. Every year, nearly 40% of our country's food ends up in landfills while millions of people go hungry. Food Lifeline rescues and redistributes healthy, nutritious food to people in need. We receive millions of pounds of surplus food from farmers, manufacturers, grocery stores, restaurants, and retailers every year. Our Hunger Solution Center, completed in 2016, has 190,000 square feet of space to hold this rescued food before volunteers sort and repack it. Food Lifeline then delivers it to more than 350 food banks, shelters, and meal programs throughout Western Washington - providing 280,000 meals every to our most vulnerable community members. At the same time, we are working to solve hunger for future by advocating for change and partnering with other organizations and agencies dedicated to ending hunger. The Hunger Solution Center is a hub for innovation and partnership that allows our community to join the movement to end hunger. We convene people at all levels to mobilize efforts that address hunger and other measures of poverty. It is easy and effective to donate your food, funds, voice, or time towards ending hunger. Visit FoodLifeline.org and find out how you can get involved.

Great News! There is a new permanent, nationwide Summer EBT program—also known as SUN Bucks—to help families ensure their school-aged children have access to nutritious meals when they are not in school. ☀️ SUN Bucks is separate from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and provides $120 in food benefits to each eligible child. Learn more about this new program here: dshs.wa.gov/sunbucks The USDA estimates that in Washington state, this program will benefit 507,000 children. Senator Patty Murray played a crucial role in making this program permanent as the longtime sponsor of the Stop Child Summer Hunger Act. This new program was also supported by the efforts of school districts, hunger relief and community organizations, and community members, who saw the need to ensure children receive nutritious food, even when the school bell rings for the last time. We continue to advocate for policy proposals and community-led solutions to solve summer hunger.

Heading into a sunny weekend on some good news - The Universal Free School Meals movement is growing! As one of our advocacy priorities, we worked with other hunger advocates to expand access to free school meals in Washington this legislative session, and will continue to push for universal free school meals. From the NYT article: “In total, more than 21 million American children now attend schools that offer free meals to all — a tenfold increase from 2010. “Schools did not want to go back to charging some kids,” said Crystal FitzSimons, the director of child nutrition programs and policy at the nonprofit Food Research and Action Center. “They saw the huge benefits of providing free meals to all students: supporting families, supporting kids, changing the culture of the cafeteria.” Interested in this work? You can join our advocacy list to help win policy proposals - like universal free school meals - that alleviate poverty and hunger: https://lnkd.in/grnRk_ta
