One of our projects in construction is the Oakwood Public Market in Dripping Springs. These Trusses are made from Big Glulam (glue-laminated mass timber) and Steel Tension Rods. The 44ft long trusses are built from 6 3/4" x 18" deep glulams with 1 1/4" steel tension rods. We carefully detailed all the connections to handle the loads of the structure while keeping them looking sleek as they'll be visible from the interior of the space. The cross-bracing you see at the top is there for added stabilization during construction. The builder will remove this temporary bracing once the steel rods are fully tensioned. We're very excited to get the construction documents out on this industrial design focused medical office building by studio ELES. All of the unique forms and exposed steel required extensive coordination. Again, Building Information Modeling (BIM) enabled us to ensure every detail was thoughtfully considered and accounted for. While in Portland for the International Mass Timber Conference, we had the opportunity to visit the Timberlab mass timber fabrication facility. This facility produces timber annually to build an estimated 800,000 sq. ft. of fabricated glulam components that are used all over the US. Timberlab will be fabricating and erecting all of the mass timber elements for our new office building on East 7th Street, so it was awesome to see the CNC machines in action along with some of the other pieces in the shop. #masstimber #masstimbermovement #greenbuilding #sustainability #structuralengineering #fabrication #construction

Last week we attended International Mass Timber Conference in Portland to expand our knowledge of this exciting construction type. Mass Timber includes all types of engineered wood products (Glulam, Cross Laminated Timber, Mass Ply, etc), and is a new way to build large and small buildings to create beautiful and sustainable structures. By levering technology, BIM, and CNC machines, we are able to design and construct all shapes and sizes of wood elements to be rapidly assembled. We're feeling exta inspired after the conference and are looking forward to a future where FORT Structures can continue to work on and incorporate more mass timber into our projects. We couldn't let Women's History Month pass by without recognizing the amazing Women of FORT Structures. In an industry that is still predominantly male, we see, value, and recognize the unique perspectives, accomplishments, and experiences of the women on our team. FORT's own Paula Wright, PE had this to say about being a woman in the engineering field: "There are many hurdles ahead for women in engineering. I compare those hurdles to the constant engineering challenge of pushing the boundaries for more efficient and eco-friendly designs. The beauty is in the process and in the endurance of climbing over the hurdles. We use Building Information Modeling (BIM) to carefully coordinate the multitude of structural elements in complex structures for ease of fabrication and construction. The BIM model shown on this image was used to bring together all elements in the structural design of this new new 2-story house in Austin. The project includes a steel framed porch covered by a translucent Kalwall roof with suspended glass walls, a folding roof with thin overhangs, multiple skylights, and a band of clerestory windows around the house that will allow sunlight into the main living areas on the first floor. The house was framed using mostly wood elements with limited use of structural steel to keep cost down.
