You may know him as "Mr. Transition" from his renowned book The First 90 Days, but that's just the beginning. I had the privilege of sitting down with Michael Watkins to discuss not only The First 90 Days but also his latest book, The Six Disciplines of Strategic Thinking. But our conversation didn't stop there. When two people with non-linear career paths come together, you never know where the discussion will lead. We delved into the intersection of AI and leadership, emotional regulation, and much more. Jump into our conversation by clicking the link below. https://lnkd.in/g5bukDYD

Leading a team is all about energy. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲, 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺'𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆. How do you do that? Our Genesis Team Development Accelerator gives you the framework and tools you need to build a high-energy team. Specifically, it will help you develop a team that: ✅ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 by fostering a shared understanding of team members' histories, values, capabilities, and roles. ✅ 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 by driving shared commitment to the team mission, vision, values, and goals. ✅ 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 by developing psychological safety and the capacity to have challenging conversations. ✅ 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 by maximizing the team's productivity when working together in person and virtually. Finally, you must be the "Energizer in Chief" for your team. That's why energy is at the core of the framework. And my 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 is a powerful framework for assessing youe readiness to excel in enterprise leadership. The five are:   ✅ Embracing complexity and ambiguity ✅ Leading through paradox ✅ Balancing enterprise and unit responsibilities ✅ Cultivating emotional intelligence and political savvy ✅ Prioritizing self-care and resilience      If you want to learn more about these challenges and how great coaches help their clients navigate them, read the article and let us know what you think. Do you have what it takes to be an enterprise leader?   Every transition involves learning new skills and adopting new behaviors.   And, as I have discussed in previous posts, the #1 transition trap is thinking you will be successful by doing what you are already good at.   𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 – 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗣&𝗟 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 – 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲” 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱𝘀.   In my research on this challenging transition, I identified seven major shifts in skills and behaviors that leaders need to make as they move up to the enterprise level: ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 – 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 – 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀. ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁 – 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀. ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 – 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮-𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 – 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁 – 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. ✅ 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 – 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 “𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼” 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.   These shifts show up most powerfully when you are appointed to lead a business for the first time.   However, everyone on a business leadership team needs to think of themselves as enterprise leaders.   So, if you aspire to go to the top, it’s not too early to prepare yourself to make these shifts.   Have you become an enterprise leader? Or do you aspire to do so? Please share your thoughts about this transition and the Seven Seismic Shifts. ___ I am the co-founder of Genesis Advisers and the author of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝟵𝟬 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 and 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. You started a new role expecting you could leverage your strengths to be successful.   And then it hits you that “𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆.”   You don’t have all the skills you need to be fully effective in this job.   This can be an anxiety-provoking realization.   But the good news is that you haven’t fallen into the most common (and dangerous) transition trap: 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸.   In my last post, I explored this trap, stressing that you won't go far wrong if you focus laser-like on figuring out how you will create value in your new role. I call that your "unique value-driving proposition."   But what if the ways you can best create value require building new skills or learning new leadership behaviors?   Then, it’s time to refocus yourself on learning.   Start by defining your leadership development agenda. This should be no more than two or three things you will work on.   Now, start to practice.   Participants in my IMD Transition to Business Leadership Program spend time with Juan-Carlos Holgado, a world-renowned Olympic archer and coach. His most important message is to practice with a purpose. “Break it down,” he says, “focus on what you most need to develop and work on it until you see progress and then move on to the next thing.”   It’s simple but powerful advice. But it’s what you must do to meet the adaptive challenges you will face in most new roles.   Have you faced this challenge when taking a new role? If so, what did you need to work on, and how did you work on it?   #LeadershipTransitions #NewRoleChallenges #AdaptiveLeadership —- I am the co-founder of Genesis Advisers and the author of The First 90 Days and The Six Disciplines of Strategic Thinking. At Genesis, we coach leaders taking new roles, help them build and accelerate their teams, and support them as they transform their organizations. Contact me to learn more.
