“Whiskey fungus” is a pain in the neck of anyone storing large quantities of alcohols like ethanol. A pain in the neck for their neighbors, too. If you’ve seen black-colored streaks or stains on big white tanks, then you’ve likely seen it. It’s called baudoinia compniacensis, and it’s sticky, ugly, and persistent. It’s hard to clean off, and even if you manage to get rid of it, it’ll be back. It consumes alcohol vapors as food. Where there are emitted vapors, the fungus follows. Golden Grain Energy, LLC in Mason City, Iowa, was on the whiskey fungus merry-go-round: Frequent cleanings, frequent recoats, but the nasty stains kept coming back. When a new tank was erected last summer, the company decided to try an experiment. Would coating the new tank in a siloxane topcoat specifically developed to inhibit baudoinia growth do the trick? It’s been almost a year, and now they have their answer. https://lnkd.in/gMAMqHUp
