A Conversation on Social Enterprises, Corporate Impact on Society, and People Driven Organizations With our CEO Thomas Vozzo and Vernā Myers. In this episode of "Sundays with Vernā," Thomas Vozzo, the CEO of Homeboy Industries, a gang rehabilitation and re-entry organization, and Vernā have a conversation about Homeboy's history, methodology, and mission, the business benefits of DEI, the possible positive impact the corporate sector could have on our society, the role of faith and spirituality in his leadership, and Homeboy's response during the COVID-19 pandemic as a business. Tom also shares his journey from the corporate world to Homeboy Industries, driven by a desire to impact society positively. They discuss the challenges faced by impoverished people, including systemic barriers and lack of opportunities. This conversation highlights Homeboy's approach of providing jobs, support, and a path to healing through kinship, empathy, and social justice. Together, they explore the importance of leading with humility, understanding the struggles of the impoverished, and fostering an environment where all people can thrive. https://lnkd.in/gcHBAvjR
About us
Homeboy Industries mission is to hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated adults and youth, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. For 30 years, Homeboy Industries has created a therapeutic community that provides the critical support needed for gang members and previously incarcerated individuals to change their lives. This non profit organization has made a singular impact on the Los Angeles community, not only by providing a means for thousands of individuals to support their families, but also by cultivating healing that helps ensure the cycle of violence is broken. More than 300 people each year are employed through job training positions in our downtown Los Angeles headquarters. They learn on-the-job skills in what is often their first “real” job. They are encouraged to use their workday to work on themselves through a variety of free programs and services like mental health therapy, tattoo removal, substance abuse counseling, parenting and financial literacy classes, GED tutoring, solar panel installation training, case management and legal services. Additionally, thousands of L.A. community clients, have access to a segment of our services including employment counseling and tattoo removal. These are all offered free of charge thanks, in large part, to the donations we receive. In addition to being a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, Homeboy Industries operates nearly a dozen social enterprises including: Homegirl Café, Homeboy Bakery, HomeboyFoods.com, Homeboy Diner at L.A. City Hall, Homeboy Gluten-Free Bakery, Homegirl Catering, Homeboy Silkscreen and Embroidery, Homeboy Merchandise and Homeboy Electronics Recycling. We also license the brand for distribution via Retail Grocery and an LAX quick service restaurant.

CNC partnered with Hulu for the Season 2 premiere of #UnPrisoned. Our activation featured a red carpet premiere for cast, showrunners, EPs and VIPs (Kerry Washington couldn't make it due to Covid 😔). We also created a consumer facing activation bringing the 'radical healing' themes to life with unique giveaways and interactive moments with local vendors like Homeboy Industries, Little Words Project, Sugar Hill Creamery and more. #CNCexperiences #redcarpet #experiential

This week, I got the chance to visit Homeboy Threads and was extremely impressed with the work that they’re doing. I wasn’t only impressed with their work in diverting textile waste from landfills, but also Homeboy Industries’ workforce development in Los Angeles. They’re a prime example of what a sustainable and accessible organization looks like. So excited to see them grow and provide even greater impacts 📈 Huge shoutout to Linda Lane Corrado for inviting me on-site and giving me the informative tour alongside Amy Anderson! 🙌🏾

You all need to know that Johanna Carbajal-Sandoval is going to UC Berkeley School of Law this Fall! I've known her through so many chapters, including working at Homeboy Industries, speaking in my UCLA Anderson School of Management classes, taking my undergraduate #socialentrepreneurship class, and most importantly, being a part of our family. (She somehow loves the slopes even more than me!) There is no story more humbling and awe-inspiring than hers - with huge appreciation to EVERYONE at Homeboy Industries. Most of all, thanks to Johanna and her amazing daughter for bringing so much joy and perspective and inspiration into our lives. Love you and so excited for this next chapter Johanna Carbajal-Sandoval!

It was a great way to experience what they learned about in the Homeboy Industries case study during the program’s course, “Social Entrepreneurship,” taught by Jason D'Mello Ph.D., associate professor of entrepreneurship.
