Moving from mass incarceration to mass rehabilitation, one circle at a time.

About us

Inside Circle is a healing community that runs programs within prisons and the community with the aim of empowering system-impacted people. At our core, we’re centered around the respect we have for our members and we lead change from within by providing opportunities for currently and formerly incarcerated people to heal and better serve themselves and others. What’s now referred to as Inside Circle took shape after a race riot occurred in New Folsom prison in 1996. Several inmates were seriously hurt, one fatally. This had a huge impact on inmate Patrick Nolan who saw the pain and hopelessness of the environment and had a vision to shift this dynamic from the inside. Our key mission is to reduce recidivism and build social-emotional literacy to remove all forms of violence in our prisons and wider communities. By using the power of human connection found in our peer-guided healing circles, we create the space for members to heal, transform lives, and positively impact systems by reducing violence inside and outside of adult and juvenile prisons. Prisons don’t heal, but in our experience, circles do. Tune in to our podcast at: https://insidecircle.org/podcast/ Check out our documentary at: https://www.topic.com/the-work

Our team on a recent trip to New Jersey and sitting in circle with staff from The H.U.B.B. (Help Us Become Better). From there we went to an end of year dinner with the extended team that works on our YAE (YOUNG ADULT EMPOWERMENT) initiative supporting young folks in the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission. We then rounded things out with circles in Brooklyn partnering with Bridgestreet Development Corporation, Columbia University and Both Sides of the Violence with Project Restore Bedstuy. Working to finish the year strong.

A powerful experience with community. Convened by Annie E. Casey Foundation, the first in-person Youth Justice Conference in four years, took a different approach. Attendees were invited to embrace a more profound connection through community-centered sessions. Guided by raw and reflective insights, we explored: ⚫ Sustaining Detention Reform ⚫ Expanding Diversion and Prevention ⚫ Creating Healing Spaces for Youth and Young Adults ⚫ Building Community/System Partnerships ⚫ Addressing Safety, Guns and Violence The convening was a deeply immersive experience, delving into the challenges faced by young people that ignited urgent conversations about national youth justice transformation efforts. Our moderator Elijah Norris-Holliday, MPA and panelists Burgundi Allison, Nathaniel Balis, and Stephen Bishop added depth to the discussions, addressing the urgency for equity, community partnership, and youth development. Special thanks to community partners The David's Harp Foundation, Inc., Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), and to the city of #HoustonTX for hosting us for such a transformational experience. #YouthJusticeUnleashed #YouthJustice #TransformativeConversations #BreakingBarriers #JusticeReformNow #CommunityHealing
