There Is No Inclusivity in Beauty Without Accessibility THE FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATION (FIT) recently spotlighted a significant advancement in the beauty industry. The 2024 graduates from the Master's in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management (CFMM) program unveiled their capstone project, "The Future of Accessible Beauty," highlighting the critical need for inclusivity through accessibility. Key insights: Emotional Impact: Over 20% of the global population identifies as having a disability. Integrating accessibility into every facet of the beauty experience is not only a moral imperative but a lucrative business opportunity, addressing the spending power of over $13 trillion. Economic Consequences: Addressing beauty deserts—areas where beauty products and services are inaccessible—is crucial. This untapped market presents a $10 billion opportunity for brands willing to innovate distribution, pricing, and availability strategies. Social Implications: The intersection of beauty and hormonal health is a vital, yet often overlooked, aspect. By integrating wellness and beauty, the industry can better serve women’s comprehensive needs across different life stages. FIT's research provides a roadmap for brands to embrace inclusivity, ensuring that beauty is accessible to all. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ejuxfFgw #InclusiveBeauty #Accessibility

Embracing AI as Assistive Technology: Insights from the Disability Community 🤖 In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, it's crucial to view AI not just as a technological marvel but as a tool that enhances human capabilities. The disability community offers invaluable perspectives on the use of assistive technologies, including AI, to promote autonomy and inclusivity for all. Elaine Short, from Tufts University, underscores how AI can revolutionize interactions by predicting user intentions and adapting accordingly, much like assistive robotics that empower users in creative tasks such as painting. This approach fosters collaborative assistance where users remain in control, a stark contrast to intrusive or paternalistic interventions. Moreover, the disability community's experience highlights AI's need to accommodate human diversity. Current AI models often struggle with variability outside typical datasets, impacting everything from educational tools to robotics designed without considering wheelchair users. Short advocates for AI frameworks that embrace human variation, ensuring robust and adaptive systems that learn from diverse human interactions.
