These cutting-edge installations are part of LAX's $14 billion Modernization Program, designed to transform the airport in anticipation of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Mitch Merriam, K2’s Vice President of Borders and Maritime Security, was in Seattle, Washington earlier this month for the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) 2024 Smart Ports Seminar & Expo. The event attracted professionals in the seaport industry and focused on innovations and digital technologies to enhance port operations, security, and infrastructure. Mitch recently joined the Association’s Security Committee, which explores strategies for fortifying port security against modern threats. We want to recognize Erik Deschler, a site manager on our Radiation Portal Monitor Program (RPMP) deployment team. He does a fantastic job managing site stakeholders, tracking deliverables, providing technical recommendations, and ensuring project compliance. K2 is leading the (RPMP) project, which involves the installation of radiation monitors across the US-Mexico and US-Canada borders and at seaports around the country. Erik has worked closely with Parsons Corporation and Culmen International, who are supporting the effort. Before joining K2, Erik was Director at Tetra Tech, where he oversaw the development of detection equipment, and performed outreach with domestic and international law enforcement and government officials. Prior to that, he worked for the Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) program for 14 years. We are very happy to have Erik on the K2 team! Mitch Merriam, our Vice President of Borders and Maritime Security, had the honor of attending the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) LAX Change of Command Ceremony in Los Angeles recently. Andrew H. Douglas was formally installed as @Area Port Director for the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), a position which Mitch proudly served in from late 2015 to 2017. The Area Port of LAX, which processed more than 10 million international travelers last year, encompasses seven airports plus express consignment and international mail facilities, general aviation and air cargo operations across Southern California and Las Vegas. We are pleased to announce that Maha Harrison, PMP, CM-BIM, LEED AP has joined our Critical Path Controls division. She possesses 20 years of experience in a wide variety of areas, including project management, design, process controls, and the engineering of petroleum refineries, gas stations, infrastructure, building systems, office buildings, retail banks and historical renovation. In her Managing Consultant role at K2, Maha will play a key role in identifying, pursuing, and securing new business opportunities related to project controls services, while also contributing to the growth of our Scheduling, Claims, Process, Analytics, Virtual Design & Construction, and Earned Value Management Systems teams. Prior to joining K2, Maha acquired project management expertise in client relations and service, design development and engineering, contract and vendor negotiations, and requests for proposals (RFP). K2 Security Screening Group team members continue to make great progress on a project at Portland International Airport (PDX). Project Managers Scott Jayes and Jameson Still have been installing CEIA Walk-Through Metal Detectors (WTMDs) and Rohde & Schwarz Advanced Imaging Technology (AITs) at the north and south side TSA checkpoints. K2 has worked closely with technicians from Scarabee Aviation Group and Hoffman Skanska Joint Venture (HSJV) on the job, which began in January. The project is scheduled for completion in mid-August. The world’s leading cost engineering and project controls professionals shared ideas about how to best manage, plan, schedule, and implement technology to achieve more efficient and effective business practices. The event featured more than 100 hours of technical presentations. Michael, the chair of the Productivity Performance and Earned Value Subcommittee, made a presentation on the status of the subcommittee, the benefits of joining it, as well as the value of becoming an AACE member.
