In October 2022, Kansas City approved the adoption of the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), effective July 1, 2023. The International Code Council releases a new version of the IECC every three years, and recently there has been a proposed ordinance to roll back to 2012 IECC in Kansas City. This would set Kansas City back four versions of energy code requirements. Building to 2021 IECC can be done—we’ve been doing it at Kala since the beginning, and it can be done at market rate. We currently have permits submitted to KCMO for houses ranging from $250,000 to $1.5 million. Take a look at some of our projects in Kansas City, Missouri, that exceed 2021 IECC requirements. Meet Sarah Hattaway, Office Assistant at Kala. Not sure exactly how we survived so long without her in our corner! She works hand in hand with the estimating team, coordinates events, makes sure everything runs smoothly at the office, and so much more. You may have seen her around - she has worked with the Kansas City Running Club for several years, helping with the newsletter, website, and other admin tasks.

Harnessing the power of passive building techniques and solar energy, the Fairmount house is net-zero ☀. We build homes with four major control layers in mind: bulk water, thermal, vapor, and air. Paying close attention to details related to the control layers results in a home that requires significantly less energy to operate than a traditional home. We have been monitoring the system production vs. consumption at Fairmount since the solar array was installed, and in 2023, we produced 6.39 MWh more than was required to fuel the home. While we did have construction crews in and out of the home throughout the year finishing up the project, the energy use will increase once it's occupied. We estimate that the system will still produce enough energy to fuel the home and charge one electric vehicle.
