About us

Leading Educators partners with school systems and states to nurture excellent teaching in every classroom. We leverage research to surround educators with intentional collaboration and support systems to get better together and get life-changing results for students. The future is changing rapidly, and it also promises students new opportunities not seen by past generations. If their educators help them develop the knowledge, sense of self, care for others, and confidence to solve complex challenges, they can access opportunity and create a better world. We exist to help school systems deliver on that promise. No school system is the same, but they can all become dynamic learning organizations where all students and adults are set up to achieve greatly, together. We draw from our expertise as career educators, coaches, and designers to help educators to practice what they teach and plan for the future. We partner with leaders to offer a range of customized supports, including strategic advising, ongoing curriculum-based professional learning design and implementation, and coaching, to spark transformation at scale. By building on strengths and bolstering the conditions for educators to succeed, we ensure that transformational leadership, practices, and results endure without us.

    "Over-scaffolding often shows up when all students are representing their thinking in a singular way; in other words, students are imitating the teacher instead of demonstrating their own thinking," says Rebecca Eden Allen, an experienced math instructional coach. This year, Rebecca and Leading Educators supported leaders in select District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) to tackle this issue head-on with tailored coaching sessions for math teachers. These sessions focused on shifting instructional moves to better balance support and independence, and they're making a significant difference.     DAY 2!!!! Today, the Bmore100 Literacy Coaching Institute took a deep dive into the cornerstone of our work: classroom observation. Here’s what is essential: Effective literacy coaches observe instruction through the lens of research + curricular resources + student mastery. What does research have to say about the most effective practices in accelerating literacy achievement? What are the most salient curricular instructional routines a teacher must master? Is 80% of the class on track toward proficiency? With this lens, City Schools literacy coaches will not be passive observers sitting in the back of the classroom scripting teacher actions but actively examining the literacy needs of our children. My colleagues, this type of observation + data collection sets the stage for EVIDENCE-BACKED COACHING DEBRIEFS! If you all were here, the synergy around improving teaching & learning was inspiring.

    👨🏾🏫 Teachers are eager for increased planning and collaboration time, because it offers a space for internalizing instructional goals and strengthening practices together. When teachers learn, students learn. Our students are in need of SYSTEMIC CHANGE and the ADULTS are preparing to build a system with a shared vision of coaching, defined roles and responsibilities, but even more, on Day 1, we are cultivating a SHARED MINDSET for systemic change. The mindset is simply this…100% teaching & learning! As literacy coaches, we must set the tone that advancing literacy is the SOLE AGENDA. This literacy crisis is solvable and the 100 literacy coaches of Baltimore City Schools understand the assignment!     📐 Teachers play a crucial role in shaping students' mathematical identity and aspirations. Making math relevant to their lives takes intention. Michelle Smith, a math coach in Baltimore City Public Schools, shares how the districts' partnership with Leading Educators to provide job-embedded professional learning on strong math practices is helping teachers be more collaborative and pinpoint what their students may need to learn. “During a planning session with one teacher, we sat side by side and wrote down our definitions of math vocabulary terms in our own words," Michelle says. "This hands-on approach made the concept feel authentic for the teacher, and she had an idea: to have students create a word cloud of different words related to the vocabulary terms we study each week and add them to a word bank. As we discussed further, she expressed uncertainty about how students would put certain terms in their own words. For example, when talking about the term 'origin', she realized it might be challenging for students to describe it in their own words because it’s where everything starts. Providing these instructional strategies and seeing the teachers’ light bulbs go off made me realize that these activities aren’t “extra”; they’re integral to our authentic classroom instruction and are what’s best to meet the needs of our students.
