The preliminary rounds for men's basketball are part of this first weekend of the Summer Olympics in Paris. Chesapeake native Alonzo "Zo" Mourning Jr. played on the gold medal-winning men's basketball team during the 2000 Summer Olympics and was named one of the Library’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History honorees in 2015. Soon after playing, he discovered that he suffered from the rare kidney disease focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, for which he ultimately received a transplanted kidney donated by his cousin. In 2001, Mourning founded Zo’s Fund for Life, which has raised more than $2 million to aid people suffering from kidney disease. We’re celebrating our outstanding Transforming the Future of Libraries & Archives interns in honor of #NationalInternDay today! Clockwise from upper left: Meet Maitri Pathak, a Virginia Tech computer science major working in the Digital Initiatives & Web Presence division; Brooke Patten, a Christopher Newport University graduate working in Special Collections; Shawn Williams, a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate student working with the Private Papers Collection; Nora Birchett, a William & Mary student working in the Library's Outreach department; Kade McGrail, a Virginia Commonwealth University history major, working on the Library's Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative project; and Josie Saunders, from Virginia Tech, working with the Library's information security & risk management officer. "It's been rewarding to see how technology can enhance our understanding of history and make it more accessible to everyone,” said Pathak. “The process of transcribing and analyzing these records has given me a new appreciation for the meticulous work that goes into preserving history. The crowdsourcing events are a great example of how the Library engages with the public to preserve and understand our history." The Transforming the Future of Libraries & Archives Summer Internships program offers college students experience in the library, archives and public history fields and aims to inspire consideration of careers in these areas. The program is made possible by the generosity of donors to the Library of Virginia Foundation. #Internships #VirginiaHistory #BlackHistory #WomensHistory #FamilyHistory #Archives #LibraryScience

The Rappahannock Tribe is one of the 11 federally and state-recognized tribes represented in the Library's current exhibition, “Indigenous Perspectives,” on view through Aug. 17. The Rappahannock Indian Tribe occupied the Rappahannock River valley long before European colonization and have historically remained in their ancestral homeland by living in smaller, unmapped settlements and eventually becoming landowners. Indian Neck is now their tribal headquarters. This tribe has been deeply involved in advancing the cause of Indigenous sovereignty. Recently, the tribe reacquired nearly 1,400 acres of land at Fones Cliffs on the Rappahannock River, a sacred site for the tribe and the place where their warriors repulsed an incursion by John Smith in 1608. The Rappahannock Indian Tribe received state recognition in 1983 and federal recognition in 2018. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/e3t-7pXE Shown here is a photo of Fones Cliffs taken in 2019 by Michelle Phillips. "Indigenous Perspectives" is presented by Amazon with additional support from the Community Foundation for a greater Richmond, Virginia Humanities and the Anne Carter Robins and Walter R.
