Meet Divya, an honorable mention recipient from our 2023 3rd place video contest who bravely stepped into the "Limelight" to share a bit of her story. She shared with us, "For nearly a decade, I’ve suffered from ulcerative colitis, a chronic illness. When it flares, I become severely anemic due to uncontrollable blood loss. I also struggle with debilitating pain and need to frequently access restrooms. In school, I often find myself in desperate need of the bathroom or rest, and have not been understood. When I must miss class because I am too weak, or when I spend a while in the bathroom because I am folded over myself in dizzying pain, I have returned to insensitive comments from professors or peers. My disability may be invisible, but the fact that I can hide my suffering doesn’t make me less worthy of empathy." We thank Divya for courageously sharing her story and congratulate her on all the ways she is rebranding disability through achievement! Meet Aliza, one of the recipients of our 2023 video contest honorable mentions who bravely stepped into the "Limelight" to share a bit of her story. Aliza shared with us, "When I graduated from college, I did not think I would get to go to graduate school. I did not know that I was autistic. I knew that I burnt out more quickly than my peers, that I have severe social anxiety, and that people tend to perceive me as odd and antisocial. When I found out I was autistic, I spent the next 3 years getting to know myself and working as a support professional for autistic people. I gained insight into how to think about disability and what my strengths are as an autistic person. I took prerequisite classes and eventually got into graduate school. Now I am in a Communication Disorders master’s program at Bridgewater State University, where I have accommodations that help me succeed. I also have job in the accommodations office where I can meet with and advocate for other disabled students. " We are so proud of Aliza and congratulate them on all the ways they are rebranding disability through achievement!
