Transform lives, one wish at a time.

About us

Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic serves children who reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Founded in 1983, the organization has granted over 10,000 wishes in the Mid-Atlantic region since its inception. This year alone, 840 local children are expected to be diagnosed with a critical illness. However, for every wish granted, at least one local child is waiting. The community has the opportunity to make an impact today by helping Make-A-Wish to reach hundreds of kids whose wishes would go otherwise go unanswered this year. Alayna from Swanton, Maryland, is a ray of sunshine, and true to her nature, she spends most of her time outside soaking up the warm rays. Though she battles a rare respiratory disorder, the six-year-old remains dedicated to her artwork and studies, recently receiving the “Student of the Month Award.” Alayna's favorite place is the beach where she can enjoy the ocean with its beauty and sense of peace and calm.  When Alayna learned that she would be granted a wish from Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, she knew right away what she wanted most: to go on a beach vacation in Florida with her family!  Accompanied by her parents and older brother, Alayna jetted off to the Sunshine State, ready to have the time of her life. There, she enjoyed several perfect sunny days on the beautiful beaches, building sandcastles, collecting colorful seashells, and splashing in the crystal-clear water. Of course, you cannot visit Orlando without a trip to Universal Studios! Alayna thoroughly enjoyed visiting the park and its many attractions, meeting her favorite characters, eating delicious food, and trying out thrill rides. The wish trip was not just a vacation; it was a celebration of Alayna’s strength and uplifting positivity amidst a challenging medical journey. More importantly, it gave Alayna and her parents a chance to set aside their constant worry of her medical condition and bask in the warmth of the Florida sun.

Soraya is a courageous 11-year-old girl living with a neuromuscular degenerative disease that affects every part of her body. Soraya’s parents, Tasha and Safi, both dedicated medical professionals, were frustrated and at time felt defeated when faced with trying to find a diagnosis. But when Soraya’s wish was granted – it sparked a new adventure for the entire family. Soraya wished to go to the beach. This experience was more than just a trip; it was a life-changing adventure that brought the family closer and gave them new hope and perspective. “A wish is a pause. A time to pivot. And a wish is an opportunity. It really pushes a family to put things into perspective.” - Tasha, Soraya’s mom This summer, we have a special opportunity to help more children like Soraya experience the magic of a wish through our Summer of Wishes Matching Challenge. Your gift today will double with help of our matching grant from our Joy Partners. Donate today at summerofwishes.org!

Eleven-year-old Sumukh from Boyds, Maryland, lives and breathes all things aviation. Unlike most other kids his age, he has already mapped out his future career path with unwavering certainty. Despite his recent cancer diagnosis, Sumukh is determined to become a world-renowned pilot. Inspired by the numerous eighteen-hour flights he and his family make to India, Sumukh fell in love with flying and the exhilaration of being in the sky. This passion has kept him positive and optimistic throughout the ups and downs of his medical journey. He spends much of his free time watching various aviation videos on YouTube. Sumukh wished to have an XForce Flight Simulator, an advanced computer system designed for pilots and rookies to hone their skills and learn how to operate an aircraft. This specific product in particular interested Sumukh, containing the ultimate package for a pilot in the making – from an XForce custom gaming system, to a throttle quadrant, state-of-the-art switch panels, three large flatscreen monitors, actual flight pedals, and a sim cockpit – everything he would need to create the most immersive training experience. Getting to spend countless hours doing what he loves the most since receiving the simulator has been the most thrilling experience for Sumukh, and an even greater experience for his parents to witness his joy. While he still makes time for normal kid activities like having Nerf battles with his friends and playing with Legos, Sumukh’s commitment to practicing his craft will no doubt fuel his career as a successful pilot and give him something to look forward to during his treatment.
