Many IVF patients shop around for the right doctor. But few patients ever meet their embryologist—the person who actually makes their embryos. As fertility treatment has become more accessible, there’s been an explosion in curiosity about what exactly happens behind the scenes. This video, in which embryologist Alease Daniel Barnes (@aleasetheembryologist on TikTok) demonstrates the process of injecting a single sperm into an egg, garnered more than 10 million views on TikTok. For his latest issue of The Preprint, our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Neel Shah spoke to Alease and other industry experts about the role of embryologists in the IVF process, how investment in embryology labs can potentially boost success rates, and the ways that innovative robotics and AI technology are shaping the future of IVF. Read and subscribe here: https://bit.ly/3A0iqeL Special thanks to Pinnacle Fertility, Inc., CCRM, Conceivable Life Sciences, Alife, Alease Daniel Barnes, and Dr. Steven Katz for their insight and expertise.

Men are encouraged from a young age to talk about sex—but they rarely talk about fertility. With so much social pressure around virility and masculinity, there’s often a stigma around fertility testing for men. Case in point: while men account for roughly 50% of infertility cases, 18-27% are never tested during an infertility evaluation. And regardless of the diagnosis, most assisted reproductive technology doesn’t actively target male fertility—meaning women ultimately end up shouldering the burden of physical intervention. In this way—as author, investor, and Maven advisor Leslie Schrock puts it—women become treatment surrogates for their male partners. So how can men get engaged with their reproductive healthcare? Our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Neel Shah explores this question and more in The Preprint: https://bit.ly/4eO1jNe
