The best leaders think like gardeners. Just as gardeners nurture crops and produce, leaders cultivate teams and ideas. Leaders who think like gardeners grow the strongest teams. At the most basic level, the concept of leading Like a gardener focuses on the imperative that leaders must set the conditions for others to successfully grow and produce. Picture this scenario that many teams we work with find themselves in year after year: Leaders spend dozens of hours setting their strategy and thinking about goals to achieve said strategy. They put this together in a PowerPoint deck or on a page and then share it widely at the beginning of the year, hoping to spur buy-in for the year ahead. Then come summer that strategy gets lost in the shuffle of the day-to-day tasks that inevitably arise, creating a ripple effect of problems down the road where work isn’t aligned or doesn’t contribute to the overarching strategy. We incorporate OKRs into our strategy alignment process with organizations to ensure clear, measurable goals are present for all levels of the organization. This method fosters accountability and transparency, driving teams to focus on what truly matters and achieve significant results. The 2024 Summer Olympics are nearly here, and with it comes the opportunity to watch the best athletes in the world compete against each other. It's easy to tell who is the best in the world at running, swimming, and gymnastics. It's much harder to do so in the business world, where performance metrics can be few and far between, and too often those metrics don't tell the story of an organization's success. It's possible to capture employee performance AND link it to company success, but it takes buy-in from leadership and digital tools to make the process transparent and lasting. Learn how one organization did exactly that in this week's newsletter: https://lnkd.in/ep68bswa Don't get the newsletter delivered to your inbox? Sign up for it here: https://lnkd.in/es8AbHUT

My book recommendation for this month is ‘Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World’ by General Stan McChrystal, Tantum Collins, David Silverman, and Christopher Fussell. Chapter 3, 'From Complicated to Complex,' particularly resonated with me. It emphasizes that while complicated systems are predictable, complex systems have many interacting parts with unpredictable outcomes. Sales are inherently complex—unpredictable, and require adaptability. Embrace flexibility, strategize, and commit to continuous learning and development to navigate the dynamic sales landscape successfully with your teams. Have you read it? We can't believe we are more than halfway through the year either. But the midway point does serve as an ideal time to check in and take stock of what the past six months have held for your organization and recalibrate for the second half of the year ahead. The next six months are sure to be eventful. Geopolitics, an upcoming presidential election, and the continuing impact of inflation on the economy are all sure to test leaders’ resolve and their teams’ resiliency. Instead of worrying about events and circumstances outside of one’s control, savvy leaders turn that energy into improving themselves and those around them. To cap off the second quarter, we’ve pulled together a collection of our best insights and resources to help leaders do just that. From attracting a talented workforce to keeping them engaged and the leadership behaviors to thrive, there is sure to be something for everyone.
