Last month, we hosted our annual Cities & Sports Business Luncheon at Cipriani 42nd Street, raising over $1.3 million for the Museum of the City of New York. Over 400 guests from the worlds of sports, media, culture, and business joined us for an engaging discussion on how sports can drive economic development for cities. Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, Ronay Menschel Director and President of the Museum, highlighted the Museum’s unique opportunity to showcase how sports drive economic growth and foster social connections. NYC’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development, Maria Torres-Springer, emphasized the significant impact of sports venues like Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden on the city’s vitality. The event featured a dynamic panel discussion moderated by James G. Dinan, Co-Owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. Panelists included David Blitzer (Co-Owner, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Guardians, Crystal Palace Premier League, Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals), Jon Ledecky (Co-Owner, NY Islanders), Stephen M. Ross (Chairman, Related Companies; Owner, Miami Dolphins), Chris Stadler (Managing Partner, CVC Capital), and Clara Wu Tsai (Governor, New York Liberty; Owner, Brooklyn Nets; Vice Chair, BSE). They shared their insights on the pivotal role of sports in urban growth and community development. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our mission. 🌈 Friday, June 28th marked the anniversary of the #Stonewall Uprising in 1969 when LGBTQ+ patrons of the Stonewall Inn Bar and their allies in Greenwich Village fought back against a police raid. Activists commemorated the anniversary of the events at Stonewall one year later with Christopher Street Liberation Day, which sparked the beginning of annual #pride marches in New York and around the world. For the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in 1994, nearly one million people marched in the annual parade, demanding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights be extended to LGBTQ+ people. That year, the Museum of the City of New York recognized the landmark anniversary with the photography exhibition “PRIDE = POWER!.” 📷: Gay Men's Health Crisis. [Get It - Stonewall 25]. Don't miss "This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture," which is on view through July 21. An interactive and sweeping exhibition examining what NYC has meant to people, "This is New York" focuses on artists, writers, and other creators who have been inspired by the city. One section, Tempo of the City, borrows its title from an iconic street scene photographed by Berenice Abbott. Abbott's photographs are still amongst the most popular images of the city to this day. She was most interested in the changing look and feel of the city, the intersection of old and new, of the juxtaposition of tenements and skyscrapers. The scene featured here was made in the spring of 1938 and captures lunch hour on Broadway and 44th in the relatively newly created business district of Midtown. The cast iron clock, installed in 1907, hearkens back to an earlier age before the popularization of wristwatches. 📸: Berenice Abbott. Tempo of the City I. 1938. Museum of the City of New York. 📰 🚨 📰Good news for NYC culture and our beloved #MCNY visitors: thanks to Office of the Mayor of New York City, New York City Council, and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the funding of libraries and cultural institutions has been restored in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025 Budget! As Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, Ronay Menschel Director and President of #MCNY, commented to CNN: “The Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) is delighted to learn of the restoration of cuts to the cultural sector. This support makes it possible for MCNY to be open seven days a week, starting on July 1. As such, the Museum's exhibitions exploring history, popular culture, and art will be open to the public on Tuesdays & Wednesdays for the first time since the pandemic. City support also allows the Museum to operate as a cooling center, open at no charge to anyone who seeks relief from warm weather. Free admission is provided to children under the age of 18 at all times." Read more: https://lnkd.in/ew_ReX3d

Looking for a cool place to hang out in New York City? Visit #MCNY before July 21 to see "This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture." A section of the show highlights private refuges such as rooftops and fire escapes. In a city that can overwhelm, these places are seen as the hidden or personal spots, the places in-between, the places of human scale or where we can be at a remove. From performance artists to photographers to comic book writers, artists have turned to these semi-private spaces to find a new perspective on the city and to celebrate a special kind of New York freedom. • As we honor Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the incredible Shirley Chisholm, a trailblazer with proud Caribbean roots. Born to Barbadian parents, Chisholm made history as the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first to seek the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Her words still resonate: "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." Shirley Chisholm's Caribbean heritage deeply influenced her pioneering spirit and dedication to social justice. At the 1972 Democratic National Convention, she addressed the Women's Political Caucus, championing women's rights and equality. Today, Museum of the City of New York opens as a cooling center for New Yorkers in need of temperature relief. We welcome you to enjoy air conditioning with a dash of our city’s history, art and culture. Cultural institutions in New York City offer incredible intellectual and social benefit, but they also play a role as critical municipal infrastructure. When the City needed locations for vaccination and COVID test distribution during the pandemic, #museums were there. Museum of the City of New York offers voter registration onsite and will be registering voters at our summer events. Our institutions have been at the forefront of services to migrant communities, including Spanish-language education programs and support for the IDNYC identification program. And as New Yorkers increasingly need cool spaces during warmer months, we are here for that too. I’m inspired by MCNY’s content and programming every day, but I also take seriously our role in powering a vibrant, resilient city where people have access to physical and intellectual resources they need to thrive. Special thanks to Jerry Gallagher, Henry Galindo and the facilities and security teams at MCNY for working with the City on this initiative. #cultureforall #nocutstoculture
