#NAWCAD partnered with St. Mary's College of Maryland to host STEM teachers from Southern Maryland on a tour at Naval Air Station Patuxent River for some hands on-training in Navy research. The teachers toured several labs and learned the ways the Navy researches challenges at sea, and how to teach those lessons to their students. This effort is part of an “AirTalent” grant from the National Defense Education program. Take a look at the experience https://lnkd.in/gPgHyMXB

"What is a radar horizon? What are salvo equations? What are TacSits, and how do they affect operations? Civilian employees—who make up most of warfare centers’ technical workforce—must learn these concepts on their own or not at all.” #NAWCADian Matt Cosner—the F/A-18 and EA-18G program’s Science and Technology lead—is reimagining what it's like to be a #USNavy civilian advancing capability for #NavalAviation and our warfighters with no fleet experience. His solution? Gaming. Specifically, wargaming to help non-military professionals speak the same language as the warfighters they support. It wouldn’t be difficult as nearly 40% of Navy civilians are veterans. “Each warfare center could design and host annual wargames centered on one or more of the 11 focus areas in the Naval Science and Technology Strategy. For example, #NAWCAD could run games on aerospace technologies; the Naval Undersea Warfare Center could cover undersea systems; and the Naval Information Warfare Centers could examine C5ISR/space.” Check out his proposal in this #USNI Proceedings piece and let us know what you think below: https://lnkd.in/ePAHFPyH (U.S. Navy photo by Matthew Poyner)

Around the Command | #NAWCAD Lakehurst launched more than 90 regional students' summers with payloads of #STEM fun at the command's Camp Invention. Campers learned engineering concepts by creating a robotic lab-on-wheels, used new tools to build inventions, and more. Camp Invention is one of dozens of summer camps, internships, apprenticeships, and workshops that NAWCAD employees host annually to give back to their communities in Maryland, New Jersey, and Florida. When it's a literal family of flight test... In case you missed it, #NAWCAD's strike test squadron Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23) recently partnered with Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron (VMX) 1 to airlift a non-operational F-35 from our site in Patuxent River, Maryland to its new home in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Here are the brothers who helped make it happen! During the flight, Maj. Alex Horne (left) provided observation and regional familiarization assistance over the shoulder of his brother Lt. Col. Adam Horne who piloted the mission's CH-53K King Stallion. Adam is the Officer in Charge at VMX-1, and Alex is the Operations Officer here at #VX23 where he flies developmental tests for F-35B and C, and each variant of the F/A-18. The coolest part of Alex's job? (Aside from occasionally flying with his brother...) “The chance to fly so many models, types and series of aircraft is the coolest thing about my job,” said Horne. “It’s also surreal to witness all the people who are involved in the success of the mission. It’s the ultimate team sport – it takes a series of concurrent miracles.” Flight test is a miracle. It's a team sport. And in this instance, it's a family affair! #OurPeopleOurADvantage #IAmNavalAviation

📍 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — U.S. Navy fighter pilots came home to Virginia feeling relieved Friday after months of shooting down Houthi-launched missiles and drones off Yemen’s coast in the most intense running sea battle the Navy has faced since World War II. Cmdr. Benjamin Orloff, a Navy pilot, told reporters in Virginia Beach on Friday that most of the sailors, including him, weren’t used to being fired on given the nation’s previous military engagements in recent decades. “It was incredibly different,” Orloff said. “And I’ll be honest, it was a little traumatizing for the group. It’s something that we don’t think about a lot until you’re presented with it.” But at the same time, Orloff said sailors responded with grit and resilience. “What’s impressive is how all those sailors turned right around —- and given the threat, given that stress —- continued to do their jobs beyond reproach,” Orloff said, adding that it was “one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.” MORE ⬇️

Some great Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD)/NAVAIR history here. "In 1968 (~26 years after the Doolittle Raid) he (Rear Admiral Miller) reported as Commander, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, with additional duty as Fleet Air, Patuxent and Naval Air Systems Command Test and Evaluation Coordinator." More information on Admiral Miller's incredible Navy career here: https://lnkd.in/eA7F9yCm
Today in history in 1912 in Fairbanks, Alaska. HENRY LOUIS "HANK" MILLER, SR. was born. Without any doubt the most valuable person. He made the Doolitle raid a great success by teaching the Doolittle raiders to take off from a very short distance from an aircraft carrier.
